Wake County Mugshots: Arrest Photos, Jail Custody & Court Records
If you are looking for mugshots in Wake County, North Carolina, start with the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services arrest-information portal for arrest records and booking photographs. If your real question is whether someone is in jail now, use the Wake County Sheriff inmate inquiry instead.
Those systems answer different questions. An arrest-photo record can remain relevant to a past arrest even after a person leaves custody, while the inmate inquiry is designed for current detention information. North Carolina court records are the next step when you need to understand the case after booking.
Use each system for the question it is designed to answer instead of treating one mugshot page as a complete criminal-history record.
Start with the official Wake County search route
Use the arrest-information portal for Wake County booking-photo and arrest-record research. Use the Sheriff inmate inquiry when you need current jail status.
Which Wake County Search Should You Use?
The fastest route depends on what you are actually trying to confirm. Wake County arrest photos, current jail custody and court outcomes are maintained through different systems.
How to Search Wake County Mugshots and Arrest Records
Use this sequence when you need to move from an arrest photo to a current custody or court answer without mixing records from different systems.
Wake County Arrest Records and Booking Photos
The Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services provides the official local arrest-information route. Its current disclaimer says the records on the site reflect arrests that occurred in Wake County from April 27, 2007 forward, to the extent the Bureau has been made aware of them.
That start date should not be read as a guarantee of a complete criminal history. The Bureau expressly says it cannot guarantee that every Wake County arrest for a person appears in the system.

Wake County Sheriff Inmate Search for Current Jail Status
Use the Wake County Sheriff Police-to-Citizen inmate inquiry when your question is “Is this person currently in Wake County detention?” This is a different task from searching historical arrest photographs.
A person may have a Wake County arrest record but no longer be detained. Conversely, a very recent custody event may require rechecking the official jail system if the public record has not yet appeared where you expected it.
Use the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services arrest portal.
Use the Wake County Sheriff inmate inquiry.
Use the North Carolina Judicial Branch Wake County page and eCourts.
Wake County Arrest-Record Kiosk Access
Wake County’s current portal notice says the planned August 17, 2026 move away from internet access was postponed. It also identifies two physical kiosks where the information currently available through the arrest portal can be accessed.
| Location | Where | Access hours stated by Bureau |
|---|---|---|
| John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center | Main lobby, 330 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC | Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; closed on Wake County-approved holidays |
| Wake County Detention Center | Zero level near the Magistrate’s Office, 3301 Hammond Rd., Raleigh, NC | Lobby listed as open 24/7, including weekends and holidays |
The Bureau lists 919-255-7369 for questions about the portal-access change. Because Wake County says a new implementation date will be announced in advance, check the portal notice before making a special trip.
How to Check the Wake County Court Case After an Arrest
Once you have identified the correct arrest, use the North Carolina Judicial Branch for the case that follows. North Carolina completed statewide eCourts implementation in all 100 counties in October 2025, and Wake County uses the statewide electronic court system.
Use eCourts for public case information
The Wake County court page provides routes to court dates and online services. Searching by a correct name, citation number or case identifier can help connect a booking to its court activity.
Use the Clerk for official copies
The Judicial Branch explains that eCourts Portal provides public docket access but is not itself the official court record. Official copies should be obtained through the appropriate Clerk of Court.
Booking Record vs. Court Record: What Changes?
A booking record captures information around the arrest and jail-intake stage. A court record follows the legal case after charging. They can diverge as the case develops, which is why a mugshot should never be used as a substitute for checking the court outcome.
| Question | Best starting source | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Was the person arrested in Wake County? | Bureau of Forensic Services arrest portal | Conviction or current custody |
| Is the person in county jail now? | Wake Sheriff inmate inquiry | Final court disposition |
| What is happening in the criminal case? | NC eCourts / Wake County Clerk | Current detention unless custody is separately confirmed |
| Is the person in state prison or under state supervision? | NC DAC offender search | Current Wake County jail custody |
NC DAC Offender Search: When Wake County Jail Is Not the Right Database
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction maintains a separate offender search for state prison offenders, probationers and parolees. The agency says its public database includes current and historical information dating back to 1972.
NC DAC expressly states that this database does not include county jail information. If you are searching for someone who is currently held in Wake County before a state transfer or sentence, stay with the Wake County Sheriff inmate system.
NC SAVAN: Custody Status and Notifications
North Carolina’s Statewide Automated Victim Assistance and Notification system, commonly called NC SAVAN, provides custody-status information and notifications. NC DAC says the service includes county jail inmates as well as state prisoners, probationers, parolees and registered sex offenders.
The service can send notifications by phone, email, text message or TTY. NC DAC describes SAVAN as free and confidential, making it more useful than repeatedly checking a mugshot page when your real concern is a custody-status change.
How to Avoid Matching a Wake County Record to the Wrong Person
Name-only searches can be misleading, especially with common surnames, initials, suffixes or similar ages. Treat the name as a starting point rather than final identification.
Compare dates
Match the arrest or booking date to the event you are researching. An old Wake County arrest can belong to a different incident.
Compare case clues
Use charge wording, case numbers or court dates when available. These details are more useful than relying on a photograph alone.
Verify current status
Check the jail and court systems separately before describing anyone as currently incarcerated or convicted.
Wake County Mugshot Search Troubleshooting
Check spelling and date context first. Remember that Wake County’s Bureau says its portal is not guaranteed to contain every arrest for an individual.
This can simply mean the arrest is historical and the person is no longer in Wake County custody. Use the court system to research what happened afterward.
Do not assume a missing photo means there was no booking. Use the current inmate inquiry for custody and verify arrest information through the Bureau or relevant law-enforcement source.
Give priority to current official court information for case disposition. The Bureau itself warns that it may not receive notice of certain automatic expunctions.
Switch to the NC DAC offender search. The county jail inquiry and state corrections database cover different custody systems.
Contact the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court or follow the Judicial Branch’s court-record instructions. Portal viewing is not the same as obtaining an official record.
