How We Research and Review Jail, Booking, and Mugshot Information
Our editorial policy is designed for a sensitive public-record topic where missing context can materially change what readers believe about a person. We therefore emphasize source quality, current status, identity caution, and clear distinctions between arrest, booking, charge, custody, and conviction.
Official Source First
Sheriffs, jails, detention centers, courts, corrections agencies, and other government sources receive priority when they control the underlying record.
Booking ≠ Conviction
We do not describe an arrest, booking, charge, or mugshot as proof of guilt.
Identity Caution
Names, ages, locations, and photographs can be incomplete or misleading. A match should be independently verified.
Local Research
Jail systems differ county by county. We research the relevant jurisdiction rather than assuming one standard process.
Our Source Hierarchy
- County sheriff, jail, detention center, corrections department, or official inmate-search source.
- Official court or clerk source when case outcome, disposition, docket, or filing status matters.
- Official statutes, rules, public-record policies, forms, and government instructions.
- Other authoritative institutional sources for context.
- Third-party sites only for comparison, common user questions, or secondary context—not as a substitute for an available controlling official source.
Statements We Avoid Without Strong Support
- Calling someone a “criminal” solely because they were booked.
- Calling a charge a conviction.
- Stating that a person is currently in jail based on an old roster.
- Assuming a same-name result is the correct person.
- Claiming no record exists simply because an online search returns nothing.
- Presenting a commercial background-check site as an official source.
Verification Checklist
| Question | Editorial response |
|---|---|
| Who controls this record? | Identify the sheriff, jail, court, or government agency closest to the source. |
| Is the roster current? | Look for an update timestamp or explain that current custody should be confirmed directly. |
| Does the page show charges or disposition? | Do not conflate charges with final court outcome. |
| Is the mugshot still current and properly attributed? | Check the source and avoid implying a photo proves guilt or current custody. |
| Could this be the wrong person? | Preserve identity caution when identifiers are limited. |
| Could a later case outcome change the context? | Where practical, direct readers to court disposition information. |
Human Review
Important links, steps, descriptions, and high-impact factual statements are reviewed by a person before publication.
AI Policy
AI may assist research organization, drafting, editing, or quality checks. It is not accepted as evidence of identity, custody, guilt, charge status, or case disposition.
Updates and Corrections
We may revise content when official roster links move, agency contact information changes, a case outcome materially changes context, or we identify a misleading description. Credible requests are reviewed under our Corrections & Removal Policy.
Commercial Independence
Advertising or affiliate revenue may support the website. Commercial relationships do not change the distinction between a private service and an official jail, sheriff, court, or government source. Material affiliate relationships should be disclosed clearly and close to the recommendation.
