Shelby County TN Mugshots, Recent Arrests & Jail Booking Search
To check whether someone is currently in the Shelby County Jail system, start with the county’s official Inmate Lookup Tool. Search by first and last name, add a date of birth when available, or use a supported identifier. The lookup also provides an option to include released inmates.
For most searches, the useful sequence is custody record → booking identifiers → charges and bond → court case → release or transfer status. A booking record or booking photograph documents an arrest or detention; it does not establish guilt or show the final outcome of a criminal case.
Start with the official inmate lookup
Shelby County says the public lookup can be used to determine whether a person is in custody. Correct spelling of the person’s full name is important; a date of birth can help narrow a common-name search.
Treat each system as a different snapshot: jail custody, criminal charges, court proceedings and final case disposition are not the same record.
How to Search Shelby County Jail Records
The official Inmate Lookup Tool offers two basic routes: search by name or search with an identifier. The name form includes first name, last name and date of birth fields, plus an option to include released inmates.
Shelby County Mugshots, Recent Arrests & Booking Photos
People searching for “Shelby County mugshots” are usually trying to answer one of three questions: was this person arrested, are they currently in custody, or what happened after the arrest? The official inmate record is the better starting point because it connects the person to a specific booking rather than an unverified image copied by a third-party site.
What a jail record can establish
- A matching person was entered into the jail system.
- The record can provide identifiers useful for further research.
- Current versus released status may be distinguishable in the lookup.
- Charges, bond or court-related details may be associated with the booking.
What it does not establish
- That the person was convicted.
- That every charge remained unchanged.
- That the booking photo is still current.
- That the jail record shows the final court result.
Which Shelby County Jail Facility Holds the Person?
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office identifies two primary adult jail locations. Male inmates are housed at the downtown Main Jail, while women are housed at Jail East in east Memphis.
| Facility | Address | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Main Jail | 201 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38103 | Primary downtown jail facility; Sheriff guidance identifies this location for male inmates. |
| Jail East | 6201 Haley Road, Memphis, TN 38134 | Full-service Sheriff’s Office facility currently used for women. |
Shelby County also operates a separate Division of Corrections at 1045 Mullins Station Road. Do not assume that every person in county custody will appear under the same facility workflow; transfers and different custody stages can matter.
Bond, Jail Release & What Happens Next
Shelby County directs people seeking bond information to jail information resources. The Sheriff’s current inmate guidance states that a cash bond can be posted through the 24-hour court clerk’s office in the Jail Annex visitation area, or a licensed bonding company may be used. The Sheriff’s Office does not recommend a particular bonding company.
Start with the inmate record or call Jail Information. Use the exact person and booking details to avoid discussing the wrong case.
Do not assume release is immediate. The Sheriff’s FAQ says processing includes steps such as fingerprints, photographs, warrant checks, NCIC processing and medical checks.
The Sheriff’s published guidance says processing averages under two hours, but actual release can take roughly three to six hours after the release is ordered depending on circumstances.
Recheck the official lookup or call the jail rather than treating a third-party roster as real-time confirmation.
Check Shelby County Criminal Court Records After the Booking
A booking is only the beginning of the criminal-case timeline. Shelby County directs users to its criminal justice system for case and court-date information. For Criminal Court cases, the county also explains that some searches require a case number, indictment number or booking number.
General Sessions
Many initial criminal matters move through General Sessions Criminal Court. The clerk can help with docket or booking-number questions and court-date information.
Criminal Court
More serious or indicted cases may appear in Shelby County Criminal Court. The county’s Criminal Court page provides case-payment and case-search guidance.
Visitation, Money, Mail & Property
Visitation
The Sheriff’s Office currently uses video-visitation services and says visitors must be approved on the inmate’s phone PAN list for video visits. Onsite scheduling availability can change, so check the current jail-visitation page before making a trip.
Check current Shelby County Jail visitation instructions.
Depositing money
Current Sheriff’s guidance says VendEngine/CorrectPay handles inmate deposits. Options include a lobby kiosk, CorrectPay online or app deposits, and phone deposits. The Sheriff’s page lists in-person commissary-account deposits at the facilities from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., seven days a week.
Review current inmate deposit options.
Sending mail
For the Sheriff’s jail system, current guidance instructs senders to include the inmate’s full name and booking number. A complete return address is required. Soft-back books or magazines must come directly from the publisher.

Property release
The inmate must initiate a property-release request. Sheriff’s guidance says property may not be released when it is evidence or when law enforcement has placed a hold on it.
Tennessee SAVIN Custody Notifications
Victims and other eligible users who need ongoing custody updates should not rely on repeatedly refreshing a mugshot page. Shelby County participates in Tennessee’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification service.
The county says TN SAVIN can provide notices for events such as release, transfer, escape, return to custody, death in custody or placement in work release. The service is free and available around the clock.
If You Cannot Find the Person
Check the spelling and try the person’s legal name. Add date of birth when available. Recent intake may also take time to become searchable.
Use the lookup’s option to include released inmates. A current-custody search alone can miss someone who has already left the facility.
Use the booking identifiers and court record. Do not substitute an image from a different person or an unrelated commercial mugshot site.
Treat the court docket as the later procedural record. Arrest charges can change after booking.
Check current custody with Jail Information and, when appropriate, Tennessee state-custody resources. A missing county-jail result does not prove the person was never booked.
