Kentucky arrest, booking and custody lookup
Find Kentucky Mugshots, Recent Bookings & Custody Records
If you are looking for a Kentucky mugshot from today or a very recent arrest, start with the jail or detention center serving the county where the arrest happened. Kentucky does not publish one official statewide page that works as a real-time booking roster for every county. If the jail is unknown, Kentucky VINE can help with custody location and status; if the person is in the state correctional system, use the Kentucky Offender Online Lookup (KOOL); and if you need the case outcome, move from the jail record to Kentucky court records.
Start with the record that matches your question
Do not search every database at once. Use the local jail for a new booking, VINE when you need custody status, KOOL for Kentucky Department of Corrections offenders, and the court system for the legal case or final disposition.
Reviewed Oct. 23, 2026 Official Kentucky corrections, court and local-government resources were checked for the search routes described below.
How Kentucky Mugshots and Jail Bookings Are Organized
The biggest source of confusion is that “Kentucky mugshots” sounds like one statewide database. In practice, the information is split between local jails, state corrections, custody-notification systems and courts. The fastest search depends on where the person is in the criminal-justice process.
County or metro jail booking
A person arrested today is commonly processed through the local detention center, county jail, regional jail or metro corrections department. That local system is usually the best place to look for the current booking date, inmate number, listed charges, bond information and any booking photograph the agency makes public.
State corrections record
KOOL is operated by the Kentucky Department of Corrections. It is useful for people in the state corrections system, but it should not be treated as a complete live feed of every new county arrest. The Department also warns that offender data newer than 120 days may not yet be finalized.
Custody notification
Kentucky VINE receives custody information from jail booking systems, prisons and certain other facilities. It can help locate a person and can provide notifications about custody changes. This is especially useful when you know the person’s name but are not sure which jail is holding them.
Court case and disposition
A booking record does not answer what happened in court. Kentucky court records are the better source for charges filed in court, later amendments, orders and dispositions. For copies of court case records, the Kentucky Court of Justice directs the public to the Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was handled.
How to Search Kentucky Mugshots Today: Step by Step
Use this order when the arrest is recent. It reduces false matches and avoids relying on a third-party mugshot page when an official custody or court source can answer the question.
Use the arrest location, police agency, city, courthouse or jail name if you know it. Kentucky has 120 counties, and recent bookings are commonly handled locally rather than through one statewide daily roster.
Look for labels such as “Current Inmates,” “Inmate Search,” “Jail Roster” or “Inmate Information.” If the public roster displays photos, compare the photo only after confirming the name and other identifiers. Louisville Metro Corrections and Lexington-Fayette Community Corrections both publish official inmate-search entry points.
Use the person’s name or available offender identifier. Kentucky’s Department of Corrections says VINE can provide custody status and allows registration for notifications. You can also call VINE at 1-800-511-1670.
Open the official Kentucky Offender Online Lookup and search with the most specific information you have. Treat KOOL as a Department of Corrections offender tool, not as a substitute for a same-day county booking roster.
If you need to know what charges were filed, what happened after arraignment, whether a charge changed, or how a case ended, use Kentucky Court of Justice resources or contact the Circuit Court Clerk for the county where the case was handled.
Compare full legal name, middle name or initial, age or date of birth when lawfully available, county, booking date, inmate or offender number, and court case number. A name match by itself is not enough for common names.
Which Kentucky Record System Should You Use?
| What you need | Best starting point | What it may show | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Someone arrested today | Official county jail or detention center | Current custody, booking details, charges, bond and sometimes a photo | Each county publishes different fields and updates on its own schedule |
| Which jail holds the person | Kentucky VINE | Custody location/status and notification options | It is a custody-notification tool, not the final court record |
| State corrections offender | Kentucky KOOL | DOC offender information and, when available, photo-backed records | Not a live statewide list of every new county arrest |
| Final case result | Kentucky Court of Justice / Circuit Court Clerk | Court filings, orders, dispositions and case records | Access method depends on the case, court and record age |
| State criminal record report | Kentucky AOC Background Checks | Eligible Kentucky District and Circuit Court case information | State court activity only; it is not a federal criminal record report |
| DOC record not shown online | Kentucky DOC Open Records | Records in DOC custody that are available under applicable public-record rules | A written request is required; county jail records may belong to a different agency |
Search the County Jail First for a Recent Kentucky Arrest
If the arrest happened today, yesterday or within the last few days, the local jail is often the most useful source. A person can be arrested and booked locally without immediately appearing in a state corrections search. Local facilities also decide which booking fields and photographs are displayed to the public.
What to look for on an official jail page
- Full name and spelling used at booking
- Booking or inmate number
- Booking date and current custody status
- Listed charges and bond information
- Court date, when the facility publishes it
- Booking photograph, when the facility makes one public
- Release or transfer information, when available
Two official Kentucky examples
Louisville / Jefferson County
Louisville Metro Corrections Inmate Search provides the official entry point for current inmate information in Louisville.
Lexington / Fayette County
Lexington-Fayette Community Corrections Inmate Information provides a current-inmate search and publishes instructions for bond, visits and inmate services.
What Kentucky KOOL Shows—and What It Does Not
Kentucky Offender Online Lookup (KOOL) is a Kentucky Department of Corrections service. It is a strong statewide tool for DOC offender information, but its scope is different from a local jail’s live booking list.
Use Kentucky VINE When You Need Custody Status or Release Alerts
Kentucky VINE is a free automated notification system described by the Department of Corrections as a way for victims and concerned citizens to receive custody-status information and alerts. Kentucky states that the system gathers information from jail booking systems, prisons and certain other facilities.
Micro steps for a Kentucky VINE search
- Open the Kentucky DOC VINE information page.
- Follow the official link to VINELink, or call 1-800-511-1670.
- Search using the offender’s name or jail/DOC identifier when you have it.
- Confirm the displayed facility and custody status before relying on the result.
- If you need ongoing changes rather than a one-time lookup, use the registration option for phone or email notifications.
VINE is useful for custody tracking, but it still does not replace the court record. A release, transfer or custody change tells you what happened to custody, not necessarily what happened to the criminal charge.
How to Check the Criminal Case After You Find a Booking
Once you have a county, booking date and person identifier, move to the court system if you need the legal status of the case. The Kentucky Court of Justice explains that official court case records document the proceeding and can include citations, pleadings, motions, orders, evidence, reports, dockets and transcripts.
For copies or review of a court case record
Start with the Kentucky Court of Justice Request Court Records page. For Circuit, District, Family and Business Court cases, the court system directs requests to the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was handled. The clerk can advise where the record is located and how it can be accessed.
For a statewide Kentucky criminal record report
The Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts also offers criminal-record background checks. The AOC says these reports are based on Kentucky state court activity and can include eligible traffic, misdemeanor and felony case information from District and Circuit Courts across all 120 counties. They do not provide federal criminal records.
For card payments, the court system lists a credit or debit card processing fee of 2.25% of the transaction amount or $2.50, whichever is greater. Because fees and procedures can change, confirm the current amount on the official background-check page before submitting a request.
Mugshot, Arrest Record, Booking Record and Criminal Record Are Not the Same
| Record type | What it generally means | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Mugshot / booking photo | A photograph associated with booking or an offender record when the agency publishes it | Visual identification support, never proof of guilt |
| Booking record | Jail intake information such as booking date, inmate number, listed charge and custody details | Confirming a recent jail event and present custody |
| Arrest record | Information connected to an arrest event, which may be held by the arresting agency or appear through related court and jail systems | Understanding that an arrest occurred and which agency handled it |
| Court case record | The official documentation of what happened in the judicial case | Charges filed, orders, hearings and final disposition |
| Criminal record report | A compiled report of eligible state court activity produced through the AOC background-check process | Reviewing broader Kentucky state-court history within the service’s scope |
Why a Kentucky Booking or Mugshot May Not Appear Yet
A missing result does not prove that no arrest occurred. Different systems update at different times, and the person may be in a different custody system than the one you searched.
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| No result after a very recent arrest | Booking processing or public-system updates may not be complete | Retry the official county jail search and contact the facility if the matter is urgent |
| No result in KOOL | The person may be in local jail custody rather than the state DOC system | Search the county jail and Kentucky VINE |
| Jail listing disappeared | Release, bond, transfer or another custody change may have occurred | Check VINE, then court records for the case status |
| No booking photo is shown | The facility may not publish photos through its public interface | Use the official custody record instead of assuming the booking did not happen |
| Several people have the same name | The search is too broad | Compare middle name, age, county, booking date and record identifiers |
| Need the outcome, not the booking | Jail data has reached the limit of what it can answer | Use the Kentucky Court of Justice and Circuit Court Clerk |
How to Avoid Matching the Wrong Person
Names are not unique, and a mugshot can be copied long after the underlying custody information changes. Before sharing, reporting or acting on a record, compare multiple identifiers from official sources.
Match at least two or three identifiers
- Full legal name and middle name or initial
- Booking or offender number
- Booking date and county
- Age or date of birth when lawfully published
- Court case number
Then verify the current status
- Current jail or VINE custody status
- Court record for charge and disposition
- Release or transfer information
- Any correction issued by the responsible agency
For employment, housing, credit, insurance or another regulated eligibility decision, do not rely on a mugshot page or informal public-record summary. Use the legally appropriate screening process and obtain professional guidance when required.
When an Online Search Is Not Enough: Requesting Records
If the information you need is held by the Kentucky Department of Corrections but is not available through KOOL or another public page, the Department publishes an Open Records Requests process. DOC states that requests for records in its custody must be made in writing and provides email, mail and fax options.
For a DOC offender-record request
The Department asks requesters seeking offender-related records to include the offender’s full name plus the date of birth or offender identification number. Follow the current instructions on the official page because the required destination and procedures can change.
For county jail or arresting-agency records
Use the records process of the county jail, jailer, sheriff, police department or other agency that actually holds the record. A Kentucky DOC open-records request is not a universal request channel for every county jail. If you are unsure who holds the record, start with the agency named on the booking or arrest information and ask where the record should be requested.

The Best Search Order for Kentucky Mugshots Today
For a same-day or recent Kentucky arrest, begin with the official county jail. If you do not know where the person is being held, use Kentucky VINE. Use KOOL when the person may be in the Kentucky Department of Corrections system. Once you need the legal status or final outcome, leave the jail record behind and check the Kentucky court record.
The most reliable result comes from connecting those sources rather than treating a single mugshot page as the whole story. Verify the person carefully, distinguish custody from case outcome, and use the responsible agency when you need a correction or an official copy of a record.
