Wake County Mugshots, Recent Arrests & Booking Records
If you are searching for Wake County NC mugshots or a recent arrest, start with the county’s official arrest-record system rather than a private mugshot gallery. Wake County’s Bureau of Forensic Services maintains the arrest-information portal, while the Wake County Sheriff’s Office handles local jail custody. Court records are maintained separately by the North Carolina Judicial Branch.
How to Search Wake County Mugshots for Free
The most direct official route for a Wake County arrest photograph is the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services Arrest Records Portal. Older websites may still call this agency the Raleigh/Wake City-County Bureau of Identification or CCBI. The agency name changed to Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services effective December 1, 2024.
The portal’s current disclaimer says the database covers arrests that occurred in Wake County from April 27, 2007 to the present, when the Bureau has been made aware of them. The Bureau also warns that the online record may not contain every arrest associated with a person.
Finding Recent Wake County Arrests
A recent-arrest search and a current-inmate search answer different questions. The Bureau of Forensic Services arrest system is useful for identifying an arrest event and available booking photograph. The Sheriff’s detention system is more useful when the question is whether the person is still being held.
| What you need | Best starting point | What it can tell you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recent arrest or mugshot | Bureau of Forensic Services Arrest Portal | Wake County arrest information and booking-photo access when published | Does not prove current custody or a conviction |
| Is the person in jail now? | Wake Sheriff inmate inquiry | Current local detention information when available | A released or transferred person may no longer appear |
| Charges and case outcome | NC eCourts / Wake Clerk of Superior Court | Filed case, hearings and available disposition information | Not a mugshot database |
| State prison, probation or parole | NC Department of Adult Correction | State corrections and community-supervision records | Does not include county jail information |
Very recent arrests can create timing differences between systems. Booking, fingerprinting, magistrate review, bond decisions and court-file creation do not necessarily appear on public websites at exactly the same moment. If the event happened very recently, use more than one official source before concluding that no record exists.
Check Whether Someone Is Currently in Wake County Jail
For current local custody, try the Wake County Sheriff’s Police-to-Citizen inmate inquiry. This is separate from the Bureau of Forensic Services arrest-history system.
Wake County Detention Center
Address:
3301 Hammond Road
Raleigh, North Carolina
Detention information:
919-773-7930
Wake County Sheriff’s Office
The Sheriff’s Detention Division operates Wake County’s adult detention facilities. If an online inmate result is unclear or unavailable, detention staff are the more appropriate source for a current custody question.
The Police-to-Citizen system may reject some browsers, networks or automated requests. Try the Sheriff’s portal from another normal browser session, or call the Detention Center at 919-773-7930 for current detention information.
Do not assume that a missing inmate result means the arrest never occurred. A person may have been released, transferred, booked under a different name variation, moved to state or federal custody, or may not yet appear in the public-facing system.
Wake County Public Mugshot and Arrest-Record Kiosks
The Bureau of Forensic Services says the information available through its arrest portal is also available on two public kiosks. These are useful fallbacks if the online service changes or a visitor prefers in-person access.

What a Wake County Booking or Arrest Record Actually Means
Booking information is a snapshot of an arrest and intake process. It is not the same as a criminal judgment. This distinction matters because the charge presented at arrest may later be amended, dismissed, reduced or resolved differently in court.
| Record field | What it usually helps identify | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Mugshot / booking photo | The person photographed during arrest processing | Guilt, conviction or current custody |
| Arrest date | When the arrest event was recorded | The final outcome of the criminal case |
| Arresting agency | Which law-enforcement agency made the arrest | That the Sheriff’s Office created the underlying incident report |
| Charge | The allegation associated with the arrest or booking | That the person was convicted of that charge |
| Bond | A release condition set at that stage of the case | A fine, sentence or finding of guilt |
| Court date / docket | A route into the court case | That the displayed arrest information is the final case status |
The arresting agency is especially important. An arrest made by Raleigh Police, Cary Police, Apex Police, the Wake County Sheriff or another agency can lead to the same Wake County booking process, but the incident report usually remains with the agency that created it.
Check What Happened After the Wake County Arrest
Once you find the booking, move to court records if your real question is what happened to the criminal case. The North Carolina Judicial Branch Wake County page provides court-date, court-location and local contact resources.
North Carolina’s Judicial Branch states that Wake County criminal matters are handled at the Wake County Justice Center.

Using NC eCourts after an arrest
- Open the North Carolina eCourts Portal.
- Search the person’s full name or a known case number.
- Narrow the search to Wake County where appropriate.
- Compare the filed charge with the charge shown in the arrest record.
- Look for scheduled hearings, case status and available disposition information.
- Contact the Wake County Clerk when you need certified documents or details that are not publicly available online.
Why a Wake County Mugshot or Arrest May Not Appear
A zero-result search is not enough to prove that a person has never been arrested. The official Bureau itself warns that its arrest database may be incomplete.
Very recent booking
Public systems can update at different stages. Recheck after processing and compare the arrest portal with current detention information.
Name mismatch
Try the legal surname first, then legitimate spelling variations, middle-name differences, hyphenation or suffix changes if applicable.
Already released
A person can have a valid arrest record without remaining on a current inmate roster.
Different county
Living in Raleigh or Wake County does not prove the arrest occurred there. The arrest record may belong to another North Carolina jurisdiction.
Expunged or restricted record
Some records may be expunged, sealed, confidential or otherwise unavailable for public display.
Wrong database
County arrest history, current jail custody, court cases and state prison records are separate systems with different purposes.
Use this fallback sequence
- Recheck the spelling and arrest date.
- Search the official Bureau of Forensic Services arrest portal.
- Check Wake Sheriff detention status.
- Search Wake County criminal cases through NC eCourts.
- Use an in-person Wake arrest-information kiosk if necessary.
- Contact the arresting police agency for its own incident or arrest report.
Certified Wake County Criminal Records and Background Checks
A normal mugshot lookup is not a certified background check. If you need an official court record for legal or administrative purposes, North Carolina provides a separate process.
| Record | Official source | Published fee | Important scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online Wake arrest lookup | Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services | Free to search online | Arrest information; not a conviction report |
| Certified single-county criminal background check | Wake County Clerk of Superior Court | $25 | Checks court records in one county |
| NC fingerprint-based Right to Review | North Carolina SBI | $14 | Your own North Carolina fingerprint-supported history |
Certified Wake County court background check
The North Carolina Judicial Branch directs individuals seeking a certified single-county criminal record search to complete Form AOC-CR-314 and submit it to the Clerk of Superior Court with the current $25 fee. Mail requests accept a money order or certified check; in-person requests can use additional payment methods listed by the Judicial Branch.
Review official NC criminal background-check instructions.
Your own statewide fingerprint-supported North Carolina record
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Right to Review is different from a county mugshot search. The SBI currently lists a $14 fee for a North Carolina fingerprint-based personal review. It is intended for a person requesting their own state criminal-history information.
When to Use NC Prison Search or NC SAVAN Instead
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender database should not be your first stop for a new Wake County jail booking. NCDAC states clearly that its offender search covers state prisoners, probationers and parolees and does not include county jail information.
NC Department of Adult Correction
Use the NCDAC Offender Search when a person has entered North Carolina state prison custody or is on probation or parole.
NC SAVAN custody notifications
NC SAVAN provides free custody-status information and automated notifications. The service includes county jail inmates as well as state prisoners and supervised offenders.
24-hour automated line: 1-877-627-2826
NC SAVAN is particularly useful when the main concern is a future custody change. Instead of repeatedly refreshing a mugshot page, a person can register for eligible custody notifications. The service should supplement, not replace, personal safety planning or direct contact with law enforcement when there is an immediate safety concern.

Use the Record That Answers Your Actual Question
For Wake County NC mugshots, begin with the Bureau of Forensic Services arrest system. For current detention, use the Sheriff’s custody resources. If you need to know what happened after the arrest, move to Wake County court records instead of relying on an old booking photograph.
The most reliable search is usually a short chain: confirm the arrest, confirm present custody if relevant, identify the arresting agency, and then verify the criminal case through the court system. That approach avoids one of the biggest problems with mugshot searches—treating an arrest snapshot as if it were a complete criminal history.
