Austin, Texas arrest and booking record lookup

Find Austin Mugshots, Current Jail Status and Court Records

If you are searching for an Austin mugshot after a recent arrest, start with the record that answers your immediate question. The Austin Police Department maintains an official booking-photo database, while the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is the better starting point when you need to know whether someone is currently in county custody.

The live APD booking-photo notice states that adult arrestee photographs are posted 13 days after the arrest when they are eligible for release. That means a person arrested today may have a current jail record long before an APD booking photo becomes available.

Do not treat a mugshot as proof of guilt. A booking photograph, arrest entry, warrant or criminal charge documents part of a criminal-justice process. It does not establish a conviction or tell you the final outcome of the case. Use court records when disposition matters.

Which Official Austin Record Should You Search?

An “Austin Texas mugshots” search can actually mean several different things. Someone may want a booking photo, confirmation that an arrest occurred, current jail status, a bond amount, a court date or the final outcome of a criminal case. No single database reliably answers all of those questions.

What you need Best official starting point Why
Official Austin booking photo APD Booking Photo Database Searches posted booking photos by name, DOB, booking number, booking date or charge.
Recent or same-day arrest Travis County Find an Inmate Current custody can be available before an APD booking photo is posted.
Bond information TCSO Bond Information Explains bond types and directs users to charge-level bond information.
Upcoming criminal court setting Travis County Criminal Docket Search Searches criminal settings by defendant, attorney, judge/court or cause number.
Felony court record Travis County District Clerk The District Clerk handles district-court criminal records, including felony cases.
Misdemeanor record Travis County Clerk The County Clerk provides misdemeanor case search and copy options.
Police incident report APD Incident Report Search Useful when you need a public report rather than a jail or mugshot record.

How to Check a Recent Austin Arrest

For an arrest that happened today, yesterday or within the last several days, do not begin by assuming a mugshot should already be visible. The official APD booking-photo page currently tells users that photographs are posted 13 days after arrest. Start with custody and booking information instead.

Open the Travis County Sheriff inmate page. Use the official Find an Inmate page. Travis County also lists its direct public inmate-search portal at public.traviscountytx.gov.
Search the legal name carefully. Use the spelling most likely provided at booking. If the result is broad, compare additional identifiers rather than assuming the first matching name is the correct person.
Record the booking identifiers. Save the booking number, jail ID, booking date, charge information and other available identifiers. These are more reliable than a screenshot or name-only match.
Check each charge and bond entry. A person can have multiple charges with different bond conditions. Review each charge separately before drawing a conclusion about release.
Search APD booking photos later if you need the image. Open the official APD booking-photo database after the posting window described in its current notice.
Finish with the court record. A jail entry shows booking and custody information. The criminal court file is the better place to check later filings and case disposition.
Practical shortcut: if you already have a booking number or cause number, use it whenever the official system accepts it. Exact identifiers reduce false matches when several people share similar names.

How to Search Austin Police Booking Photos

The Austin Police Department Booking Photo Database Search is the main official route for publicly posted Austin booking photographs. Read the notice before selecting the acknowledgment option.

APD currently states that searches can use a last name, first name, date of birth, booking number, booking date or charges. The database may also contain booking photos from other police agencies that use Travis County Central Booking, so the presence of a photo does not automatically mean APD was the arresting agency.

Best identifiers

Start with the strongest information you have

A booking number is usually more specific than a name. If you only know the person’s name, add date of birth or booking-date information when necessary to separate similar records.

Publication limits

Not every arrest produces a public photo result

APD states that juvenile arrestee photographs are confidential and not posted. The department also states that a photo may not be posted when publication would interfere with law-enforcement interests.

A missing photo is not the same as a missing arrest. The booking may be too recent, the photograph may be confidential or withheld, the person may have been booked through another jurisdiction, or the record may require a different official search route.

Check Whether the Person Is Still in Travis County Jail

A booking photo can remain useful after a person’s custody status changes. If your real question is “Are they still in jail?”, use the Sheriff’s current inmate information instead of relying on an old photo page.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office warns that its public inmate information is provided for convenience and should be verified before reliance. That warning matters because release, transfer, bond and charge information can change after a record was first viewed.

Current custody

Open Travis County Find an Inmate and search the current TCSO custody information.

Need phone help?

Travis County lists jail information at 512-854-4180. Use the official number for time-sensitive facility or custody questions.

Released or transferred?

Move to the appropriate court record, state offender search or other confirmed jurisdiction instead of assuming a missing current-inmate result means no arrest occurred.

Where Austin Arrests Go for Central Booking

Travis County Sheriff states that people arrested in Travis County are brought to the Central Booking Facility located within the Travis County Jail at 500 W. 10th St., Austin, TX 78701.

Booking and court information do not necessarily appear everywhere at the same moment. Intake, identification, charge entry, magistration, bond decisions, release processing and later court filing are separate stages. This is one reason a person can appear in one official system before another system has useful information.

After release: Travis County states that the individual receives paperwork containing a court date, or the information can be obtained through the person’s attorney. The public criminal docket is also useful for checking settings when available.

How to Find Bond Information After an Austin Arrest

Travis County Sheriff says bond information appears under each charge in its inmate search. Do not assume one bond amount applies to an entire booking when multiple charges are listed.

Cash, surety or personal bond

If the bond line says any type of bond, the Sheriff’s guidance says cash, surety or personal bond may be available. If it says cash or surety, a personal bond is not available for that charge.

No bond information yet

TCSO explains that “no bond information available” means no bond has been set for that charge at that time. A bond may be set later.

For cash bonds, TCSO directs users to the facility where the defendant is housed and advises calling 512-854-4180 to confirm the location. The Sheriff’s current instructions state that cash bonds require the full amount by exact cash, cashier’s check or money order.

For a personal bond, Travis County says only a judge can approve release. Pretrial Services or an attorney may submit a request. The Sheriff’s published guidance currently states that a defendant released on personal bond must pay an administrative fee of $40 or 3% of the bond amount to Travis County Pretrial Services within seven days of release.

Check the current TCSO bond instructions before making any payment.

Payment scam warning: Travis County Sheriff’s Office warns that phone scammers impersonate officers. Verify payment instructions through the official Sheriff’s website or published county phone numbers before sending money.

Find the Court Case Behind an Austin Mugshot

A mugshot tells you that a booking photograph exists. It does not tell you whether prosecutors filed the same charge, changed it, dismissed it, obtained a plea or reached a final judgment. Court records provide the next layer of verification.

Check the criminal docket first

The Travis County Criminal Docket Search can be searched by defendant, attorney, judge or court number, or cause number. Travis County advises checking the docket before going to the courthouse because settings can change.

Use the correct clerk for the case type

Case type Office Useful current details
Felony criminal case Travis County District Clerk The public online court-record portal lists criminal cases from 2008 to the present. Certified or authenticated physical copies require a records request.
Misdemeanor criminal case Travis County Clerk County Clerk case data from June 1986 to the present is available online, with some redacted document images available.

The County Clerk states that a basic search of electronic data is free plus any copy cost. For misdemeanor searches from 1981 to the present, a search for one name with up to three aliases is listed as free plus copy costs. Printed online documents are free but bear an unofficial-copy watermark.

If you need a certified misdemeanor document, the Clerk currently lists a $5 certification charge per document plus $1 per page. Fees and procedures can change, so verify the current fee page before ordering.

How to Request an Austin or Travis County Booking Record

Online databases are the fastest option when the information you need is already public. If a booking photo, arrest-related record or report is not available online, use the records process maintained by the agency that actually holds it.

Request a Travis County Sheriff’s booking photo

The Sheriff’s Public Information Office states that non-media requesters seeking a TCSO booking photo should use the TCSO Open Records Request process.

Identify the record precisely. Include the person’s full name and, when known, booking number, arrest date, date of birth or other identifiers that help locate the correct booking.
Describe exactly what you want. State that you are requesting the booking photograph or another specific record instead of asking generally for “everything.”
Include the required requester information. TCSO says a written request should include your name, address and a detailed description of the requested records.
Submit through an official TCSO method. The Sheriff’s page lists written request options and provides its current office details.
Understand the response period. TCSO states that the Texas Public Information Act allows 10 business days from receipt to respond to a request. That is not a guarantee that every requested record will be released within ten days.

Request Austin Police records

If the information is held by the City of Austin or APD and is not available through the online photo or incident-report databases, use the City of Austin Public Information Request service.

The City states there is no initial fee for submitting a public information request, although reproduction, retrieval, programming or labor charges can apply depending on the request. For APD public-information-request questions, the City currently lists 512-974-5212 and 512-974-5499.

No Austin Mugshot or Arrest Record Found? Check These Issues

Photo is too recent

The live APD booking-photo notice says photographs are posted 13 days after arrest. Check Travis County custody first and return to the photo search later.

Juvenile record

APD states that photographs of juvenile arrestees are confidential and are not posted publicly.

Photo withheld

APD states that a photo may not be posted when publication would interfere with its law-enforcement interests or those of another agency.

Wrong spelling

Retry the legal name and check middle names, suffixes and common spelling variations. Use DOB, booking number or cause number when available.

Released already

A person may no longer appear in a current-custody search even though a booking or later court case exists. Search the appropriate court records next.

Wrong jurisdiction

Austin city limits extend into Travis, Hays and Williamson counties. Confirm the arresting agency and county before assuming every Austin arrest belongs in the Travis County system.

Williamson County fallback

If the arrest belongs in Williamson County, use the county’s official Corrections Bureau, which links to jail-record searches by name or booking number.

Hays County fallback

If the arrest belongs in Hays County, use the Hays County Corrections Bureau and its official jail-information resources rather than a private mugshot directory.

When to Use Texas Statewide Criminal or Custody Searches

A Travis County booking lookup is not a statewide Texas criminal-history search. If the person has moved into state custody or you need broader Texas criminal-history information, use the appropriate state service.

State custody

Texas Department of Criminal Justice

The TDCJ Offender Search allows searches by name, SID number or TDCJ number and can show custody status and facility information for records in its system.

Criminal history

Texas Department of Public Safety

The Texas DPS Criminal History Search is separate from county jail and court databases. DPS currently lists a $1 search credit for a name-based search, with additional transaction fees depending on how credits are purchased.

A statewide criminal-history result and a county court disposition are different records. When a specific Austin or Travis County case matters, verify the court file rather than relying only on a jail entry or statewide name search.

Austin Texas Mugshots FAQs

1. Where can I search official Austin Texas mugshots?
Use the Austin Police Department Booking Photo Database Search for posted adult booking photos. If the arrest is very recent, check Travis County Sheriff inmate custody first because the APD photo database notice says photos are posted 13 days after arrest.
2. Why can’t I find a mugshot for an arrest that happened today?
The live APD booking-photo notice states that photographs are posted 13 days after the arrest. A missing same-day photo does not prove that no arrest occurred. Check current Travis County custody and later verify the APD photo database.
3. Does the APD booking photo database include only Austin Police arrests?
No. APD states that the database also includes booking photos from other police agencies that use Travis County Central Booking. Verify the arresting agency and booking details before describing the record as an APD arrest.
4. Are juvenile mugshots available in Austin?
The APD booking-photo notice states that photographs of juvenile arrestees are confidential by law and are not posted. Do not assume a juvenile record should appear in the public photo search.
5. How do I check whether someone is still in Travis County jail?
Use the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Find an Inmate service or the county’s official inmate search portal. Match the person with reliable identifiers and verify current facility, booking information, charges and bond details before relying on the result.
6. Where can I find bond information after an Austin arrest?
Travis County Sheriff says bond information appears under each charge in the inmate search. A charge may allow cash, surety or personal bond, while some charges may not yet have bond information set.
7. How do I find the court case after finding a mugshot or booking?
Use the Travis County criminal docket and the correct clerk. Felony records are handled by the Travis County District Clerk, while misdemeanor records are handled by the Travis County Clerk. Search with the defendant’s name or cause number when available.
8. How can I request a booking photo that is not available online?
For a Travis County Sheriff booking photo, non-media requesters are directed to the TCSO Open Records Request process. For Austin Police records that are not already online, use the City of Austin Public Information Request process.
9. What should I do if the Travis County search shows no result?
Check spelling and identifiers, allow time for booking processing, and confirm the arresting jurisdiction. Austin city limits extend into Travis, Hays and Williamson counties, so an Austin address does not always mean the record is in a Travis County system.
10. Does an Austin mugshot or booking record mean the person was convicted?
No. A booking photo or arrest entry documents an arrest or booking event, not a final finding of guilt. Use the appropriate court record to check charges, filings, dismissals, pleas, judgments or other later case outcomes.

Use the Record That Answers the Question You Actually Have

If the arrest is recent, check Travis County custody first. If you need the booking image, use the APD photo database and account for its current posting rules. If you need bond or release information, return to the Sheriff’s record. If the question is whether the charge resulted in a conviction, dismissal or another outcome, move to the criminal court record.

This sequence avoids one of the biggest problems with mugshot searches: treating a single booking image as if it were a complete criminal record. The most accurate answer usually comes from matching the booking information with the current custody record and the later court file.

Important record-use notice: CriminalCourtRecord.org is an independent informational website and is not the Austin Police Department, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, a court, government agency or consumer reporting agency. Arrests, charges, bookings and mugshots do not establish guilt. Verify identity and current case status through the responsible official agency. Do not use this page or its information as a consumer report for employment, housing, credit, insurance or other FCRA-regulated eligibility decisions.
