Find NJ Inmate Mugshots, Today’s Bookings & Arrest Records

If you are searching for nj inmate mugshots, start by identifying which system actually has the person. New Jersey does not provide one official statewide gallery for every county arrest. State-prison custody is handled through the New Jersey Department of Corrections, while fresh arrests and local bookings are usually handled by county correctional agencies. Court records are a separate step.

Do not treat a mugshot, booking entry, charge, warrant, or arrest as proof of guilt. A booking photo identifies a person at one point in the process; the court record is where you check what happened to the case.

Start with the system that actually holds the record

A New Jersey arrest can create information in several places, but those systems answer different questions. Someone arrested this morning may be in a county intake process. Someone serving a state sentence may be in NJDOC. A person may already have a criminal case visible through the Judiciary even when a jail page gives very little detail.

Use NJDOC when state custody is likely

The NJDOC Offender Information page provides the official incarcerated-person search route for state correctional custody. It is not a statewide feed of every person booked into every New Jersey county jail today.

Use county corrections for fresh bookings

For a new arrest, begin with the county connected to the arrest or court commitment. Several counties publish inmate-search tools or current-population information; others direct the public to a correctional facility, shared-services partner, or records unit.

Why this matters: a blank NJDOC search does not prove that no arrest occurred. The person may be in county custody, transferred to a partner county, released, or simply outside NJDOC jurisdiction.

How to search NJ inmate mugshots and booking records

Identify the county and likely custody level. If the arrest was recent, start with the county where the arrest or court commitment occurred. If the person is serving a state sentence or is known to be in NJDOC custody, use the state search first.
Use the official county or NJDOC lookup. Open the relevant official link in the county table below. Search with the full legal name and use a booking number, inmate ID, SBI number, age, or other public identifier when the system offers one.
Check the booking date and current location. Do not rely on the name alone. Compare the county, facility, booking or committed date, age or date of birth when shown, and any public identifier before deciding that the record belongs to the person you are looking for.
Look for the photo only after the identity match. Some official systems display photographs and some do not. A missing online photo does not mean that no booking photograph exists.
Move to New Jersey Courts for the case. Once you have the correct person and county, use NJ Courts Find a Case to check the criminal case. Court information is more useful than a booking page when you need proceedings, case status, or disposition.
Use VINE if release or transfer is the real concern. Visit VINElink or call New Jersey VINE at 1-877-846-3465. The service can provide custody information and notification options for eligible records.
Use the records custodian only when needed. If the agency does not publish the record you need, review its records-request page and New Jersey’s OPRA request guidance. Submit the request to the agency that actually maintains the record.
Best search habit: save the official agency name, URL, date checked, county, and any public booking or inmate identifier. That makes later court and custody verification much easier.

How “today’s bookings” work in New Jersey

There is no single official New Jersey page that combines every county’s bookings for the current day. “Today’s bookings” is therefore a county-level search. The most useful path depends on whether that county publishes a same-day tool, a current inmate list, or only a facility contact route.

Middlesex County

The official Archonix XJail Public system is one of the clearest same-day options. It provides public booking-search functions, and its booking log can be filtered by booking date.

Cape May County

The county publishes a current inmate listing that is updated once per day Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. It explains fields such as inmate ID, committed date, committing authority, charges, detainers, and bail.

Union County

The Sheriff’s Office provides an Inmate Look Up and says the information is updated daily, while warning that custody information can change quickly and some offenders may be excluded.

Other counties

Use the verified county route below. If there is no public roster, contact the official correctional facility or follow its records instructions rather than assuming a commercial mugshot site is current.

Same-day timing is not guaranteed. Intake, identification, court processing, release, transfer, and local publishing practices can create delays. If a person was arrested only a short time ago, recheck the responsible official source or contact the facility.

Official New Jersey county inmate and booking routes

The table below is designed to route you to the responsible official agency instead of a generic mugshot directory. Shared-services arrangements are important in New Jersey because the county of the case is not always the county where the person is physically housed.

If a county changes vendors or shared-housing arrangements, use the county government or sheriff/corrections page as the source of truth. Commercial directories can remain indexed after an official route changes.

Does every New Jersey inmate search show a mugshot?

No. New Jersey State Police explains that the State Bureau of Identification receives and stores mug-photo submissions through law-enforcement booking systems, but that repository is used by the law-enforcement community. The existence of a state biometric repository does not create a public statewide mugshot gallery.

If the official lookup shows a photo

Use it only as one identification signal. Match the facility, booking date, age or date of birth when available, and a public booking or inmate identifier before relying on the result.

If the official lookup does not show a photo

Do not jump to a commercial gallery and assume its image is current. First confirm custody through the official jail, sheriff, corrections agency, or court. If the photo itself is necessary, review the agency’s records-request rules.

OPRA is not a guarantee that a mugshot will be released. New Jersey’s public-record law contains exemptions. The Government Records Council has also issued a final decision in which an arrest photograph was not required to be disclosed under the authorities cited in that case. Review the GRC OPRA FAQ and, when useful, the Nunez v. City of Hackensack final decision.

Micro-guide: requesting a record from the right agency

  1. Identify the agency that physically maintains the record, such as the arresting police department, sheriff’s office, or county corrections agency.
  2. Open that agency’s official records or OPRA page. If you need statewide guidance first, use NJ OPRA Central.
  3. Describe the specific record you want. Include the person’s name, approximate arrest or booking date, agency, and record type when known.
  4. Do not request unrelated sensitive information. A narrow request is easier for the custodian to identify and process.
  5. Keep the confirmation and note the date submitted. OPRA guidance says requests must be in writing and sent to the appropriate custodian.
  6. If access is denied, read the written reason before deciding whether a clarification, different record request, or formal appeal route is appropriate.

New Jersey’s Government Records Council says a custodian generally should respond as soon as possible and generally no later than seven business days when the record is currently available and not archived or in storage. Extensions and different statutory timelines can apply, so seven business days should not be treated as an absolute release deadline for every request.

Booking records, court cases and criminal-history records are different

People often search “NJ arrest records” expecting one database. In practice, you may need more than one official system because a custody record, court case, and statewide criminal-history record serve different purposes.

Choose the record type based on the question you are trying to answer
Record Best for Official starting point Do not assume
County booking / inmate record Current custody, booking date, local charges or facility details where published County corrections or sheriff That every county shows a mugshot or same-day record
NJDOC incarcerated-person record State correctional custody NJDOC search That it contains every fresh county arrest
Criminal court case Case status, proceedings, filings and disposition when publicly available NJ Courts Find a Case That a charge equals a conviction
State criminal-history information Formal NJ criminal-history processes governed by NJSP rules NJ State Police SBI / CHRI information That a public web mugshot search is the same as a criminal-history report
Court follow-up matters. New Jersey Courts’ criminal case tools can show case details such as case summary, parties, proceedings, notes, and documents in applicable records. That is where you check what happened after the arrest instead of treating the booking entry as the final result.

What to do when you cannot find the person

They were arrested very recently

County intake and identification may still be underway. Recheck the responsible county source later or call the official correctional facility. Do not use a missing state result as proof that the arrest did not occur.

The county does not operate its own jail

Follow the shared-services route. Passaic sends remanded individuals to Bergen or Hudson; Sussex uses Morris; Hunterdon transfers inmates to Warren; Somerset uses Morris for longer-term detainees.

The person was released

A current-inmate roster may no longer show them. Search the court case for the legal proceeding, and use VINE if you need eligible custody-status notifications.

The name is common or spelled differently

Try legal-name variations only when the official tool supports them. Then compare county, date, age or DOB, booking/inmate ID, and court case before deciding it is the same person.

The roster is old or looks inconsistent

Read the agency’s update notice. Union County, for example, warns that its public information can change quickly even though it is updated daily.

The photo is the only missing item

Confirm the record first. If the photograph is genuinely needed, use the record-holding agency’s official request process and remember that disclosure can be limited by law.

Scam warning: never send money because a caller claims payment is required to release an incarcerated person. Ocean County Corrections specifically warns that it does not request payment over the phone for release. Confirm any financial instruction through the facility’s official website or published phone number.

How to avoid matching the wrong person

New Jersey records can involve people with the same or similar names. A name-only match is weak. Before sharing, saving, or relying on a booking record, use several independent details.

  • Match the jurisdiction: county, arresting agency, court venue, or correctional facility.
  • Match the timing: booking, committed, arrest, or case-initiation date.
  • Match a public identifier: booking number, inmate ID, SBI number, or case number when available.
  • Match age or date of birth: only when the official public record displays it.
  • Check the court: if guilt, dismissal, conviction, sentencing, or disposition matters, verify the court record instead of relying on the jail entry.
Use records responsibly. Official inmate pages may prohibit harassment, intimidation, or misuse. This guide is for locating and understanding public official records, not for targeting a person or treating an allegation as a proven fact.

This website is an independent informational resource. It is not a New Jersey court, sheriff’s office, correctional agency, police department, or consumer reporting agency. Do not use this page or arrest/mugshot information to make employment, tenant-screening, credit, insurance, or other decisions regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Official statewide resources worth saving

Frequently asked questions about NJ inmate mugshots

1. Is there one official statewide website for all NJ inmate mugshots?
No. New Jersey has an official NJDOC search for state correctional custody, but recent county arrests are handled through county correctional systems. Mugshot publication also varies by agency, so there is no single official statewide gallery containing every county booking photo.
2. How do I find someone booked in New Jersey today?
Start with the county connected to the arrest or court commitment. Use that county’s official corrections or sheriff route. Middlesex County has a public booking system with date-based booking tools, while other counties may publish a current roster, a daily list, or only a facility contact route.
3. Why is a person missing from the NJDOC inmate search?
NJDOC is a state correctional-custody search, not a complete same-day county booking feed. A recently arrested person may still be in county custody, may have been released or transferred, or may be housed by another county under a shared-services agreement.
4. Do New Jersey county inmate searches always include a mugshot?
No. Some public systems display photographs and others do not. New Jersey State Police maintains mug-photo data for law-enforcement use, but that does not mean every image is available through a public web search.
5. Can I request a New Jersey mugshot through OPRA?
You can ask the record-holding agency about access and use its OPRA process when appropriate, but disclosure is not guaranteed. OPRA contains exemptions, and the Government Records Council has upheld withholding of an arrest photograph in at least one final decision. Submit a specific request to the custodian that actually holds the record.
6. How long does a New Jersey OPRA request take?
The Government Records Council says custodians generally should fulfill a request as soon as possible and generally no later than seven business days when the record is currently available and not archived or in storage. Extensions and other statutory time frames can apply, so the actual response time depends on the request and record.
7. How do I check what happened after an NJ arrest?
Use New Jersey Courts Find a Case after you confirm the correct person and county. Court information is the better source for case status, proceedings, filings, and disposition where public access is available. A jail booking or charge should not be treated as the final court outcome.
8. How can I get notified if someone is released or transferred in New Jersey?
Use New Jersey VINE. You can visit VINElink or call 1-877-846-3465 to check eligible custody information and register for available notifications. VINE is more useful than repeatedly refreshing a mugshot or jail page when custody changes are your main concern.
9. Which NJ counties use another county’s jail?
Several current arrangements matter. Passaic uses Bergen and Hudson; Sussex houses all county inmates at Morris; Hunterdon processes inmates and transfers them to Warren; Somerset uses Morris for longer-term detainees; Gloucester also directs inmate inquiries to facilities where its offenders are housed. Always confirm the current arrangement on the originating county’s official site.
10. Is an NJ mugshot or booking record proof of a conviction?
No. A mugshot documents a booking or identification event, and a charge is an accusation. Neither proves guilt. If the legal outcome matters, check the New Jersey court record for the case disposition and other current case information.

The fastest reliable route

For a fresh New Jersey arrest, start with the responsible county. For state correctional custody, use NJDOC. If the real question is what happened to the criminal case, move to New Jersey Courts. If release or transfer matters, use VINE. Treat a booking photograph as an identification record—not a verdict—and verify the person with more than a name before relying on the result.
