Chicago Mugshots, Arrest Photos & Booking Records: Where to Search First

For an arrest made by the Chicago Police Department, start with CPD’s official Adult Arrest Search. It can show a mugshot, Central Booking Number, arrest date and location, charges and release or bond information when a public record is available. If the person was later booked into Cook County Jail, use the Cook County Sheriff’s Individual in Custody Locator for county custody and booking-photo information.

Arrest does not mean conviction. A mugshot, booking entry or criminal charge records an allegation or custody event. Charges may be amended, dismissed or resolved differently in court. Verify the court docket before drawing conclusions about the outcome of a case.
Quick distinction: CPD’s public arrest search is not a complete Cook County arrest database. It covers qualifying adult arrests made by Chicago Police. Arrests by the Cook County Sheriff, Illinois State Police or suburban police departments require the records system of the agency that made the arrest.

Start with the record you actually need

Using the correct official system first saves time and reduces the risk of matching the wrong person.

Best practice after finding a match Record the person’s exact name, arrest or booking number, arrest date and court case number if shown. Use those identifiers—not a name alone—when checking the next system.
CPD coverage Adult CPD arrests from Jan. 1, 2014 forward
Recent CPD data May take several days to synchronize
County booking Cook County locator may take about 4–6 hours after processing
Court outcome Verify separately with the Circuit Court Clerk
Search path from Chicago Police arrest record to Cook County custody and court record CPD ARREST BOOKING DETAILS COOK CO. CUSTODY COURT STATUS

One database rarely answers every question. Use the arrest record for the police event, the Sheriff’s locator for county custody, and the Clerk’s docket for court status.

Cook County Jail Booking Photos & Current Custody

If a Chicago arrest resulted in admission to the Cook County Department of Corrections, use the Sheriff’s Individual in Custody Locator. The jail system is separate from the Chicago Police arrest-search database.

Current custody

Cook County Individual in Custody Locator is the official county route for jail details and visitation-related custody information.

Phone lookup

The Sheriff’s automated custody information line is 773-674-5245. The Corrections customer-service main line is 773-674-1945.

Main facility

Cook County Department of Corrections, 2700 S. California Ave., Chicago, IL 60608.

Processing delay: the Sheriff’s current booking-photo guidance says Individual in Custody Locator results are typically published about 4 to 6 hours after a person is booked and processed. Do not treat a blank result during that window as a final custody answer.

Where does the Cook County booking photo come from?

The Sheriff’s communications guidance says that when a defendant has been booked, processed and remains in Cook County custody, the booking photo can be available through the Individual in Custody Locator. The Sheriff also advises contacting the arresting agency when seeking a booking photo.

If the locator returns no result, the Sheriff’s Press and Communications office states that a requester can provide the person’s full name and other available identifying details when asking about a booking photo. The office says digital archive booking photos from 2009 forward are the readily available archive range under its current process.

Why a photo may never appear in the county locator: a person who is released before full Cook County jail booking is completed may not have a county booking photograph even though an arrest occurred.

Charges on an Arrest Record Are Not the Final Court Outcome

The charges shown in a police arrest record reflect the arrest-stage information. Prosecutors and courts can later change the charging picture, and a case can end in dismissal, acquittal, plea, conviction or another disposition.

For the next step, use the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County online case information. The Clerk describes the public electronic docket as a resource for the general status of historical and active cases, not as the official court record.

Use the police record for

  • The arrest event
  • Initial recorded charges
  • Central Booking Number
  • Arrest date, time and location
  • Police district or beat

Use the court record for

  • Case status
  • Court dates
  • Filed case information
  • Later docket activity
  • Disposition or other court outcome
The Clerk warns that online docket updates can also take a few days. For a very recent filing or event, the online page recommends trying again later or using available courthouse public-access resources.

How to Search Chicago Mugshots Without Mixing Up Records

Identify which agency made the arrest. If it was Chicago Police, start with the CPD Adult Arrest Search. If another agency made the arrest, do not assume CPD will contain it.
Use the most specific information you have. Match the full name with age, arrest date, booking number, arrest location or another available identifier rather than relying on the name alone.
Record the Central Booking Number or county booking ID. These identifiers are much more useful than screenshots when moving between police, jail and court systems.
Check Cook County custody separately. If the person was transferred into Cook County Jail, use the Sheriff’s locator to confirm current custody and available booking information.
Verify the case with the Circuit Court Clerk. Use the court docket to check what happened after the arrest. Do not treat the arrest-stage charge as the final disposition.
Recheck time-sensitive information. Both arrest and court databases can update after the underlying event. Custody status can also change quickly.

Why a Chicago Mugshot or Arrest Record May Be Missing

Too recent

CPD says recent arrest data may take several days to reach the public system. Cook County booking information can also require processing time after jail admission.

Wrong agency

CPD’s public search does not include arrests made by the Cook County Sheriff, Illinois State Police or surrounding municipal police agencies.

Older CPD arrest

The CPD public search is limited to qualifying arrests from January 1, 2014 forward.

Juvenile record

The CPD public arrest system described here is for people who were adults at the time of arrest.

No county booking

A defendant may have been released before Cook County completed jail booking, meaning a county booking photo may not exist.

Expunged record

CPD states that when a qualifying arrest record is expunged, the appropriate public search record is removed.

Do not use absence from one database as proof of someone’s legal history. Police, county jail, state prison and court systems answer different questions and have different coverage rules.

Which Chicago Record Source Should You Use?

Match the question to the agency that maintains the relevant record.
Route Use it for Important limit
Chicago Police Adult Arrest Search CPD arrest, mugshot, Central Booking Number, arrest charges and release information Adult CPD arrests from Jan. 1, 2014 forward; recent data can lag
Cook County Sheriff Locator Cook County Jail custody, booking details and available booking photo Not every CPD arrest results in Cook County jail booking
Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Case status and electronic docket information Online data is not the official court record and can lag
Illinois Department of Corrections People transferred into Illinois state correctional custody County-jail detainees may not appear in IDOC

Central Booking Number vs. Cook County Booking ID

A police arrest record and a county jail record may use different identifiers. CPD’s public arrest results can include a Central Booking Number, while Cook County correctional services use a county booking identification number for jail-related functions.

Keep both numbers if they are available. A booking identifier is especially useful when a common name returns multiple people and when contacting jail records, checking trust-account information, sending mail or confirming custody details.

Never assume two records belong to the same person only because the names match. Compare the available age or birth information, arrest date, booking identifier and case details before connecting records.

Understanding Bond and Release Information

Older arrest and booking records can contain bond information, but Illinois changed its pretrial release system on September 18, 2023. Cook County’s current Sheriff guidance explains that cases filed before that date may still involve older cash-bond requirements, while newer criminal cases operate under the current pretrial-release framework.

For that reason, a bond amount displayed in an older police record should be read in the context of the arrest date. For a current case, use the court record and current Cook County instructions rather than relying on an old arrest screen.

If the Person Is No Longer in Cook County Jail

A blank Cook County result does not necessarily mean the person has never been arrested or jailed. The person may have been released, transferred, moved to another jurisdiction or entered Illinois state correctional custody.

Illinois state prison search

Use the Illinois Department of Corrections Offender Search for people in IDOC custody. IDOC’s search supports lookup routes including last name, IDOC number or birth date.

County jail versus state prison

Cook County Jail is a county detention system. IDOC is the state corrections system. A person awaiting trial in the county jail may therefore not appear in the state prison database.

Arrest Records, Expungement & Responsible Use

CPD’s public arrest-search page states that its listed individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. It also states that an appropriate public arrest-search record is removed after expungement.

If you are researching your own Chicago arrest history because you want to explore expungement or sealing, use current Illinois court guidance rather than assuming a public mugshot search shows your complete record. Court records, police records and statewide criminal-history records are separate sources.

Chicago Mugshots & Arrest Records FAQs

Where can I search Chicago mugshots online?
For an adult arrest made by the Chicago Police Department, start with CPD’s official Adult Arrest Search. If the person was booked into Cook County Jail, also check the Cook County Sheriff’s Individual in Custody Locator.
Does the Chicago Police arrest search show mugshots?
Yes. CPD describes mugshots as one of the public fields that can appear with qualifying adult arrest records, along with the name, Central Booking Number, charges, arrest date and other arrest details.
How far back does the Chicago Police arrest search go?
CPD states that the public search is limited to qualifying arrests on or after January 1, 2014.
Does the CPD database contain every Cook County arrest?
No. CPD says its public system covers arrests made by Chicago Police and does not include arrests by the Cook County Sheriff, Illinois State Police or surrounding municipal agencies.
Why is a recent Chicago arrest not showing?
CPD says its most recent public data may be delayed by a few days. If the person entered Cook County Jail, the Sheriff’s booking process can also create a separate delay before county custody information appears.
How long does a Cook County Jail booking take to appear online?
The Cook County Sheriff’s current booking-photo guidance says locator results are typically published about four to six hours after the person is booked and processed into the jail.
Why can I find an arrest but no Cook County booking photo?
Not every arrest produces a completed Cook County jail booking. The Sheriff notes that some defendants can be released before county booking is completed, so a county booking photo may not have been taken.
How do I check what happened after the arrest?
Use the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County’s online case information to check the general status of a case. The Clerk cautions that the electronic docket is not the official court record and can take time to update.
Where do I search if someone was transferred to Illinois state prison?
Use the Illinois Department of Corrections Individual in Custody or Offender Search. County-jail detention and state-prison custody are separate systems.
Does a Chicago mugshot prove that someone was convicted?
No. A mugshot or arrest record documents an arrest or booking event, not a conviction. CPD itself states that people shown in its public arrest records are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
