Find Mecklenburg County Arrest Mugshots, Recent Bookings and Custody Records

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office provides a Resident Inquiry route for mugshots and detention information. Start there when you need a booking photo, current custody information or a resident identifier, then use North Carolina eCourts when you need the related criminal case, hearing history or later court disposition.

Arrest does not mean conviction. A booking photograph or charge shows that a person entered the criminal-justice process; it does not establish guilt. Verify the person carefully and check the court record before treating an arrest entry as a final outcome.

A mugshot is only one part of the record. Follow the booking into the current custody and court systems before drawing conclusions.

Mecklenburg County Today’s Bookings and Recent Arrests

People searching for “today’s Mecklenburg County bookings” usually want one of three things: a newly booked person, a current detention record, or a recently released booking. Those are related but not identical searches.

Just arrested

Start with Resident Inquiry. A newly processed record may not appear at the exact moment an arrest occurs because the person must move through identification, fingerprinting, charge and booking procedures.

Currently in custody

Use the resident/detention record and check current housing or status fields instead of relying only on the original booking date.

Recently released

A prior booking can remain publicly searchable even after the person leaves custody. Do not describe an older arrest entry as a current jail stay without verifying the status field.

Case result

Move to eCourts. A booking system can show the arrest and charge, while the court record is the better route for hearings, case activity and disposition.

MCSO states that arrest and resident inquiry information can remain available online for three years from the arrest or release date. That means a search result can be historical rather than evidence of detention today.

Do not use the presence of a mugshot as proof of a current arrest. Always read the booking date, custody status and court information together.

What a Mecklenburg County Booking Record Can Tell You

Use each system for the job it handles best.
Need Use Best detail
Mugshot / booking photo MCSO Resident Inquiry Booking-related identity and detention information
Current custody MCSO resident record Whether the person appears to remain in detention
Charges MCSO + eCourts Initial booking charges plus subsequent court information
Case number / hearings NC eCourts Portal Public case events and hearing information
Official copies Mecklenburg Clerk of Superior Court Official court records and older-file requests

Booking date versus release date

The booking date identifies when a person entered the detention process for that record. A release date, if shown, indicates that particular custody period ended. Neither field by itself tells you how the criminal case ultimately ended.

Charge versus conviction

A charge is an allegation handled through the criminal process. The person may later be convicted, acquitted, have a charge dismissed, receive a different disposition, or have the case otherwise resolved. When the outcome matters, check the related court case.

PID or resident identifier

Save the identifier associated with the correct person. MCSO uses resident identifiers for practical tasks such as sending mail and identifying the correct resident when money is sent.

Check the Criminal Case in North Carolina eCourts

Mecklenburg County uses North Carolina’s statewide eCourts environment. The Judicial Branch says all North Carolina counties had completed the eCourts conversion by October 13, 2025.

The public Portal is useful for case and hearing information, but the Judicial Branch also explains that Portal itself is not the official court record. Contact the Clerk of Superior Court if you require an official copy.

Search online

Open the NC eCourts Portal and use the available search tools. A name, case number or other accurate identifier will usually produce a cleaner result than a broad name-only search.

Mecklenburg courthouse

Mecklenburg County Courthouse
832 East Fourth Street
Charlotte, NC 28202

Main telephone: 704-686-0400

Clerk public hours are listed as Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Older records: the Judicial Branch advises that documents filed before Mecklenburg County’s October 9, 2023 eCourts transition may need to be requested from the appropriate Clerk division if they are not available through Portal.

Warrants and Arrest Inquiry

MCSO’s Arrest Processing Center houses the county’s Warrant Repository and works with electronic warrant information. The Sheriff’s Office notes that North Carolina’s transition to electronic warrant systems changed how arrest and warrant information is accessed.

If you are trying to verify a warrant rather than a mugshot, do not assume that the resident-search page gives the complete answer. MCSO directs people to Arrest Processing for warrant verification and also points users toward North Carolina eCourts for public court information.

Arrest Processing Center

801 East Fourth Street
Charlotte, NC 28202

Telephone: 980-314-5100

MCSO lists Arrest Processing as operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Scam warning: MCSO warns that callers have impersonated deputies and demanded money for alleged warrants or missed court matters. The Sheriff’s Office says it does not call members of the public to solicit this type of payment.

Bond, Release and Custody Changes

MCSO Records and Release staff enter charge and bond information into the detention system and update it when court appearances change those details. They also verify that release requirements have been satisfied before a resident leaves custody.

Bond amount

Read the current record rather than relying on an earlier screenshot or copied listing. Bond information can change after a court appearance.

Release timing

Meeting a release condition does not necessarily mean the person walks out immediately. Staff perform checks for outstanding warrants, charges and release eligibility.

Court follow-up

Use eCourts after release to continue following the criminal case. Release from jail does not mean the charge has been dismissed.

Helping Someone in Mecklenburg County Detention

Once you have confirmed the correct resident, save the person’s full booking name and resident/PID identifier. Those details are useful for visitation, money deposits and correspondence.

Detention Operations, Arrest Processing and Dispatch are listed by MCSO as operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That does not mean every administrative service or visitation window operates around the clock.

Mecklenburg County Jail Visitation

MCSO requires visits to be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. The current visitation guidelines also warn that a visit is automatically cancelled when a visitor arrives 10 minutes after the scheduled time.

Listed visitation windows

  • 8:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m.
  • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
  • 8:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.

Availability can depend on the resident, facility operations, lockdowns and scheduling capacity.

Bring acceptable identification

MCSO lists valid government-issued identification such as a state ID, driver’s license, passport, military ID or international ID. Damaged, expired or apparently altered IDs may be rejected.

  • Schedule at least one day before the visit.
  • Verify the resident is eligible for visitation.
  • Arrive early enough to complete entry procedures.
  • Review current dress and prohibited-item rules before leaving home.
  • Expect a visit to be shortened or cancelled during an emergency or lockdown.

Send Mail or Money to a Mecklenburg County Resident

Personal mail

MCSO’s current mail instructions route resident personal correspondence through a mail-scanning service. The envelope must identify the resident correctly and include the required resident identifier.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office
Resident Name, Resident Identifier
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131

Do not use that personal-mail address for resident money. MCSO also requires a return address and maintains restrictions on packages, hardback books, certain publications and other prohibited material.

Sending money

MCSO accepts resident-account deposits through its authorized deposit route and also publishes instructions for mailed money orders or cashier’s checks. A mailed payment must include the resident’s correct booking name, date of birth and PID information as required by the Sheriff’s Office.

Money-order / cashier-check mailing address
Resident Name
P.O. Box 31427
Charlotte, NC 28231-1427

Confirm the current MCSO instructions before sending funds because deposit vendors and processing rules can change.

Resident Phone Calls

MCSO states that resident calls are subject to monitoring and recording, subject to applicable protected attorney communications. Residents can make calls from their housing areas, and the recipient hears a recorded notice before deciding whether to accept the call.

The Sheriff’s Office currently uses a prepaid/collect calling system and provides troubleshooting instructions when a telephone number has been blocked. Because vendor pricing and account procedures can change, confirm the current instructions on the official phone page before depositing money.

Why an Old Mugshot May Still Appear

MCSO says arrest and resident inquiry information remains online for three years from the arrest or release date. The Sheriff’s Office further states that removal before that period requires it to receive a judge-signed Order of Expunction.

An expunction is a legal process, not simply a website deletion request. If the concern is an inaccurate identity, incorrect status or another factual error, first determine whether the problem is in the Sheriff’s record, the court record or a third-party republication.

Do not assume that a dismissed or resolved case automatically disappears from every website. Court records, detention databases and third-party websites can have different retention and update processes.

If You Cannot Find the Person

No Resident Inquiry result

Recheck spelling and identifiers. The person may not be in MCSO custody, may have been released, may have been transferred, or the record may not yet be available.

Arrest happened very recently

Allow for arrest processing. Identification, fingerprinting, charges and record entry occur before the detention information becomes useful for public searching.

Old booking appears

Read the arrest and release dates. MCSO says inquiry information can remain online for three years, so a search result is not automatically current custody.

Need the case outcome

Search NC eCourts or contact the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court. The arrest record alone cannot reliably answer how the case ended.

Portal record missing

For certain Mecklenburg records filed before October 9, 2023, the Judicial Branch advises contacting the appropriate Clerk division when the document cannot be located in Portal.

Possible warrant

Use official MCSO Arrest Processing or eCourts guidance rather than paying anyone who calls or messages claiming money will clear a warrant.
