How to Find Missouri Mugshots, Recent Arrests and Jail Records
A Missouri inmate search works best when you start with the system that actually holds the record. Recent county arrests and booking photos are usually handled by a county jail, sheriff, city detention center or arresting agency. Missouri Department of Corrections records cover active state-supervised offenders, while Missouri Case.net is the place to verify public court filings and case outcomes.
Choose the Missouri Record That Matches Your Question
There is no single Missouri government page that functions as a complete statewide gallery of every recent county mugshot, jail booking, court charge and prison record. The fastest route depends on what happened to the person and which agency currently has the record.
| What you need | Best official starting point | What it can tell you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recent arrest or booking photo | County sheriff, jail, detention center or arresting agency | Current custody, booking date, reported charges, bond and a photo when the agency publishes one | Coverage and photo availability vary by county |
| State prison or active DOC supervision | Missouri Department of Corrections Offender Search | Active offenders supervised by MODOC, including qualifying probation or parole records | Not a statewide county-jail booking search |
| Filed criminal case and disposition | Missouri Case.net | Public case information, docket activity, hearings, charges and judgments when publicly available | Restricted, confidential, sealed or expunged information may not appear |
| Custody or court-event alerts | MOVANS | Notification registration for supported custody and court events | It is a notification service, not a substitute for the underlying jail or court record |
| State criminal-history check | Missouri State Highway Patrol MACHS | Name-based open-record criminal history or fingerprint-based searches | Paid service; name results are possible matches rather than fingerprint-confirmed identity |
How to Find Recent Missouri Mugshots Step by Step
If your goal is a recent booking photo, do not begin with a broad web image search. Start with the jurisdiction that booked the person, then use the court system to confirm what happened after the arrest.

If you know the county or city but not the correct sheriff or police website, the Missouri Attorney General maintains a police and sheriffs contact directory.
Missouri DOC Offender Search: When to Use It
The Missouri Department of Corrections Offender Search is the official state tool for people currently supervised by MODOC. The service says it searches active offenders, including qualifying probationers and parolees, and can search first and last names including aliases. It does not provide discharged-offender information, and some records may be withheld for safety, security or confidentiality reasons.
Use MODOC when
- The person may be in a Missouri state correctional facility.
- You are checking active state supervision, probation or parole.
- You have a DOC identifier or a reliable name match.
- You need the state corrections record rather than a local booking roster.
Do not use MODOC as a substitute for
- A county jail search immediately after a local arrest.
- A city detention-center lookup.
- A court docket showing what prosecutors actually filed.
- A complete historical background check for discharged offenders.
Micro steps for MODOC
- Open the official MODOC Offender Search.
- Read the data-current notice shown on the search page.
- Complete the required verification challenge.
- Search the first and last name; try a known alias or spelling variation only when justified.
- Compare the result with other known details before assuming identity.
- For a specific current-status question, follow MODOC’s instruction to contact the institutional caseworker, probation and parole field officer, Constituent Services or Victim Services as appropriate.
Use Missouri Case.net to Check What Happened in Court
A jail roster answers a custody question. Missouri Case.net answers a different question: whether a public court case was filed and what the docket shows. This is the key follow-up after you find a booking because arresting-agency wording can differ from the formal charge later filed in court.
Examples of Official Missouri County Jail and Booking Searches
County systems are not uniform. Some show booking photos directly, some show current inmates only, some include recent releases, and others require a records request. These examples show why a statewide Missouri mugshot search often becomes a county-by-county search.
Greene County
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office publishes an Inmate Booking Photos and Active Jail Population page. Its notice states that booking photos shown are for people currently incarcerated when the search is performed and that status can change quickly.
Jackson County
The Jackson County Detention Center Inmate Search provides selected occupant information. Jackson County specifically warns that its detention database is not itself an arrest report and directs requests for arrest reports, booking information or arrest photographs to the law-enforcement agency that created those records.
Polk County
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office inmate roster provides current roster entries and supports name-oriented browsing. Public fields can include booking information, charges, bond and a mugshot when posted.
Cape Girardeau County
The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office publishes inmate information from its site. Its disclaimer cautions that online information is provided for convenience and should not be treated as certified official records.
These examples are not a complete list of Missouri counties. Use the Attorney General’s police and sheriffs directory to locate the responsible local agency for another county or city.
MOVANS: Missouri Custody and Court Notifications
The Missouri Victim Automated Notification System (MOVANS) is a Department of Public Safety service for custody and court-event notifications. Missouri updated MOVANS in May 2026, so older instructions found elsewhere on the web may no longer describe the current registration process.
Use MOVANS when you need ongoing status alerts
- Custody-status changes for supported local jail or detention-center records.
- Supported court-event notifications.
- Notification registration connected to an offender under Missouri DOC supervision, following the current DPS/DOC instructions.
MOVANS should supplement, not replace, the jail roster, MODOC record or Case.net docket. If an offender search does not return information, the current DPS guidance notes that a local jail may be offline from the system; in that situation, check the jail directly.
Need a Missouri Criminal-History Check Instead of a Mugshot?
If your real goal is a statewide criminal-history record rather than a recent jail photo, use the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS). MACHS is administered by the Highway Patrol’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division, which serves as Missouri’s central criminal-history repository.
| Search type | What it uses | Current official fee information | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name-based personal identifier search | Name plus identifying information such as date of birth and/or Social Security number | $16 per search plus a small convenience fee according to the current MSHP criminal-record-check page | Public/open Missouri criminal-history information; results are possible matches |
| Fingerprint-based search | Fingerprints | Fees depend on the authorized search; check MACHS before ordering | Identity-critical searches because fingerprint comparison provides positive identification |
MACHS is not a free recent-mugshot gallery. It serves a different purpose. The Highway Patrol says name-search open-record information can include convictions, arrests less than 30 days old, prosecutor-filed charges awaiting final disposition, and suspended imposition of sentence records during probation, subject to Missouri law.
When a Missouri Booking Photo Is Not Online: Use the Sunshine Law Route
Missouri’s Sunshine Law, Chapter 610, governs access to many public-government records. The Attorney General explains that law-enforcement incident and arrest reports are generally open records, but important exceptions and closure rules apply. For example, if a person is arrested and not charged within 30 days, the arrest report generally becomes closed except for the disposition portion and other statutory exceptions.
A booking photo is not guaranteed to be posted online. If the photo or arrest record is not on the jail site, direct the request to the public body that created or keeps the record—often the arresting police agency, sheriff, jail or detention-center records custodian.

Why a Missouri Inmate or Mugshot Search May Return Nothing
The arrest was very recent
A local jail feed may lag behind intake. Check the arresting agency or jail directly and try again after the booking process is complete.
The person was released
Some rosters display only current inmates. A released person may disappear even though an arrest or court case existed. Check Case.net and the agency’s records process.
You searched the wrong custody system
A county detainee will not necessarily appear in MODOC, and a state prison offender may not appear in a county jail roster. Match the search to the custody level.
The name does not match exactly
Try a verified alias, hyphenation or spelling variation supported by reliable information. Do not broaden the search so far that you risk attaching another person’s record.
The record is restricted
Juvenile, sealed, expunged, confidential or legally closed records may not be publicly searchable. Do not try to bypass lawful restrictions.
The local system is offline or limited
Some county databases are temporarily unavailable or publish only part of the custody record. Use the jail’s phone or records contact, or MOVANS where applicable.
How to Read a Missouri Booking Record Without Misinterpreting It
The most useful search result is not the mugshot itself. Read the fields around it. A booking date tells you when the jail processed the person; a listed charge tells you the custody basis at that time; bond information reflects a point in the case; and the court docket may later show amended charges, dismissal, plea, acquittal, conviction or another outcome.
| Field | What it usually means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Booking photo | Image associated with a jail or custody intake when the agency publishes it | Guilt or conviction |
| Booking date | Date and time the facility recorded the intake | Date prosecutors filed a court case |
| Charge or hold | Reported legal basis for custody at that stage | Final filed charge or final disposition |
| Bond | Bond information shown by the jail or court at that time | That the person is still eligible for release on the same terms |
| Release status | Whether the roster currently reports release or continued custody | That the criminal case is over |
| Case number | Identifier used by the court for the filed case | That every booking charge became a filed charge |
