Mecklenburg County Arrest Mugshots, Today’s Bookings & Jail Records
For a current Mecklenburg County arrest, booking photo, charge or custody check, start with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office rather than a third-party mugshot gallery. The Sheriff provides separate Arrest Inquiry and Inmate Inquiry tools, which answer different questions.
Use Arrest Inquiry when you are checking a recent arrest or booking record. Use Inmate Inquiry when you need to know whether someone is currently associated with the Mecklenburg County detention system. For court dates, filings and case outcomes, move from the booking record to the North Carolina Judicial Branch.
Choose the record that matches your question
If you know only a name, begin with the Sheriff’s search tools. If you already have a case number or need the outcome of a charge, use North Carolina court records instead.
Official systems may change interface, availability or displayed fields. If an online search is unavailable, use the Sheriff’s contact information further below.
A booking record is the starting point. Court records are the better source for what happened after the arrest.
How to Search Mecklenburg County Mugshots and Arrest Records
The Sheriff separates arrest records from inmate records. That distinction matters because a person can have a public arrest record without currently being in jail, and someone shown in the inmate system may have additional custody information that is not the same thing as the original arrest entry.
How to Check Today’s Mecklenburg County Bookings
The Arrest Processing Center is the centralized intake point for people arrested in Mecklenburg County by law-enforcement agencies. MCSO states that Arrest Processing operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and uses digital mugshot and fingerprint equipment during intake.
That does not mean every arrest will appear online instantly. Intake, identity verification and data entry happen before or around publication of the public record. If a person was reportedly arrested very recently but you cannot find the record, wait for processing and check again rather than treating a missing search result as proof that no arrest occurred.
Start with MCSO Arrest Inquiry.
Check MCSO Inmate Inquiry separately.
For arrest-processing questions, MCSO lists Arrest Processing at 980-314-5100.
Use the Mecklenburg County Judicial Branch page and Portal rather than relying on the arrest record.
How to Read a Mecklenburg Arrest or Booking Record
A public booking entry can help you identify the arrest event, but each field answers a different question. Record the identifiers that connect the Sheriff’s entry to later detention and court information.
| Detail | Why it matters | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Initial identity match | Compare additional identifiers before assuming a match |
| PID / JID / arrest number | More precise record matching | Save it for custody or detention questions |
| Arrest date | Identifies the booking event | Distinguish this date from later hearing dates |
| Charge | Shows the allegation associated with the record | Use court records for prosecution and disposition |
| Bond information | May show an initial release condition | Confirm current bond status before acting |
| Mugshot | Helps distinguish records when lawfully displayed | Never treat the image as evidence of guilt |
Check the Mecklenburg County Court Case After an Arrest
The Sheriff’s record tells you about the arrest and detention side of the process. The North Carolina Judicial Branch is the better source for court dates, case information and documents that show what happened afterward.
North Carolina’s eCourts system is now used statewide. Mecklenburg County’s court page directs users to Portal for electronic case information and court dates. The Clerk of Superior Court also provides access to public records at the courthouse during office hours.
North Carolina Portal
Use the Judicial Branch’s Portal access when you need electronic case information or a court date.
For a reliable match, use the person’s exact name plus a case number or other known case detail when available.
Mecklenburg County Courthouse
832 East Fourth Street
Charlotte, NC 28202
Clerk of Superior Court public hours are listed as 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday. Main telephone: 704-686-0400.
Bond, Release and Custody Status
If the practical question is whether a person can be released or is still in custody, confirm current information before sending money or making travel plans. MCSO’s detention page lists its general information line at 704-336-8100 for inmate information, including information about paying a bond.
MCSO also directs users to VINE for information concerning specific residents. The Sheriff states that VINE can provide information about charges, bond, housing, court dates and release notification.
- Confirm that you have the correct person.
- Check current custody rather than only the original arrest entry.
- Verify the current bond information before paying anything.
- Use court records if the question concerns a judge’s later order.
- Be suspicious of unsolicited callers demanding payment on behalf of the Sheriff.
Mecklenburg County Detention Center Contact Information
Mecklenburg County Detention Center Central is the county’s main adult pretrial detention facility and also houses the Arrest Processing Center. Use the detention number for facility questions and the Arrest Processing number for arrest-intake questions.
MCSO lists Detention Operations, Arrest Processing and Dispatch as operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That operational schedule should not be interpreted as meaning every administrative service or public visitation service is available around the clock.
Visiting Someone in Mecklenburg County Detention
MCSO requires visits to be scheduled in advance. Its current visitation guidance lists visitation windows of 8:00–11:00 a.m., 1:00–4:00 p.m. and 8:00–10:00 p.m., while actual availability depends on the resident and the scheduling system.
Visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead, and MCSO says they cannot be scheduled more than one week in advance. A visitor arriving 10 minutes after the scheduled time may have the visit automatically cancelled.
Bring acceptable identification
MCSO lists valid state-issued identification, a driver’s license, passport, military ID or international ID as acceptable forms. Damaged, expired or apparently altered identification may be rejected.
Confirm before leaving home
Facility emergencies, lockdowns and disciplinary restrictions can affect a scheduled visit. Review the Sheriff’s current rules immediately before the visit.
Money, Mail and Phone Calls for Mecklenburg Residents
Sending money
MCSO accepts qualifying money orders or cashier’s checks by mail when the required resident information is included. The Sheriff also lists TouchPay options, including a kiosk, telephone funding and online funding.
For mailed resident funds, MCSO instructs senders to use the resident’s incarcerated name and include the resident’s date of birth and PID on the payment instrument. The resident-money mailing address is different from the address used for personal correspondence, so do not combine the two.
Sending personal mail
MCSO currently directs personal correspondence for residents to:
Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office
Resident Name, Resident Identifier
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
The Sheriff publishes content restrictions for resident mail and states that money should not be sent to the personal-mail address. Review the current mail rules before sending photographs, printed pages or other enclosures.
Resident telephone calls
MCSO says residents can make calls from their living area and that calls are subject to monitoring and recording. If a resident calls you, a recorded message identifies the call as coming from the Mecklenburg County Detention Center and gives options for accepting or refusing it.
For current account setup and troubleshooting, use the Sheriff’s resident phone guidance rather than an old third-party instruction page.
How Long Mecklenburg Arrest and Resident Information Stays Online
MCSO states that arrest and resident inquiry information remains online for three years from the date of arrest or release from the Detention Center. This explains why the Sheriff’s search can return older arrest information even when the person is no longer jailed.
The Sheriff also states that removal before that period requires MCSO to receive an Order of Expunction signed by a judge. Expunction eligibility is a legal question and depends on the circumstances of the case; the presence of an old public arrest entry does not by itself show whether a person qualifies.
What to Do When the Mecklenburg Search Does Not Give You an Answer
Allow time for intake and identity processing, then search again. Arrest Processing operates continuously, but a public record may not appear at the exact moment of arrest.
The person may no longer be in county custody or the custody situation may have changed. Treat Arrest Inquiry and Inmate Inquiry as separate checks.
Compare PID, JID, arrest number, dates and other identifiers. Never associate a mugshot or charge with someone based only on a common name.
Move to North Carolina court records. An arrest page does not establish whether a charge was dismissed, reduced, resolved by plea or resulted in conviction.
MCSO notes that network firewalls can interfere with its inquiry applications. Try another trusted network or contact the Sheriff through its official contact route.
