St. Louis Mugshots & Jail Bookings: Start With the Right Custody System

To look for a recent St. Louis arrest, booking or custody record, first determine whether the arrest was handled by the City of St. Louis or by St. Louis County. They are separate jurisdictions with separate jail systems, inmate searches and records offices.

The City of St. Louis inmate locator is the strongest first stop for someone believed to be held at the City Justice Center. For an arrest in St. Louis County, use the county Department of Justice Services route for the Buzz Westfall Justice Center. A jail result shows custody information; it does not establish guilt or provide the final outcome of a criminal case.

Booking does not mean conviction. Arrest records, listed charges and mugshots describe an arrest or detention event. Charges may later be amended, dismissed or resolved differently in court, so use Missouri Case.net when you need the filed case or disposition.

Choose the correct St. Louis search

Use the city locator when the arrest occurred inside the City of St. Louis and the person may be at the City Justice Center. Use St. Louis County Justice Services for county custody in Clayton.

If the arrest happened only minutes or hours ago, a person may still be in police processing and may not yet appear in a jail locator.

St. Louis City vs. St. Louis County: Which Jail Should You Search?

The most common search mistake is treating “St. Louis” as one jail jurisdiction. The City of St. Louis operates its own Division of Corrections and City Justice Center, while St. Louis County operates a separate correctional system through its Department of Justice Services.

City of St. Louis

Start here when the arrest occurred inside the City of St. Louis and the person may have been moved to the City Justice Center at 200 South Tucker Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63102.

The city inmate locator requires the person’s exact first and last name. The city warns that similar-name results are not returned.

Open the official City inmate locator

St. Louis County

Use the county route when the person was booked into the Buzz Westfall Justice Center at 100 South Central Avenue, Clayton, MO 63105.

The St. Louis County Department of Justice Services manages the county jail. Its main public number is (314) 615-5245.

Open St. Louis County Justice Services

Not sure which jurisdiction made the arrest? Check the arresting agency name on any citation, release paper, property receipt or bond document. If it says Metropolitan Police Department, City of St. Louis, start with the city. If it identifies a St. Louis County agency or the Buzz Westfall Justice Center, use the county route.

How to Search St. Louis Mugshots, Bookings and Current Custody

Confirm the person’s full legal name. City inmate searches work best with the exact first and last name used in arrest paperwork. Hyphens, suffixes and alternate spellings can matter.
Identify whether the arrest belongs to St. Louis City or St. Louis County. Do not assume the city and county use the same jail search.
Check the appropriate inmate locator or Justice Services page. Look for the facility, current custody status and any available identifying information.
Save useful identifiers. Record an inmate number, booking number, case number, date of birth or facility name when the system displays it.
Search Missouri Case.net for the court case. A jail record is about custody. Case.net is the better route for filed criminal charges, hearings and later case activity.
Check Missouri DOC after a state transfer. Someone moved from a local jail to state custody may stop appearing in the local locator.
Best identity check: match more than the name. Use birth year or date of birth, booking or inmate number, arrest date, facility and case number whenever available. Common names can easily produce the wrong person.

Where Are St. Louis Mugshot Photos?

A current inmate locator and a booking-photo gallery are not the same thing. The City of St. Louis inmate locator is primarily a custody-location tool. Its public description says results can include the inmate’s name, year of birth, race, sex and facility; it does not promise that every result will display a booking photograph.

For St. Louis County, the public jail search should also be treated as a custody lookup rather than an assumption that every booking image is publicly displayed. Availability of a photograph can depend on the system, the record requested and legal restrictions.

Need current custody?

Use the appropriate city or county inmate search first.

Need a booking photo?

If the photo is not displayed online, identify the arresting or custodial agency and use its public-records process for a releasable booking record or photograph.

Need the final outcome?

Use Missouri Case.net or the appropriate court. A mugshot cannot tell you whether a charge was dismissed, reduced or resulted in conviction.

Third-party mugshot websites may copy older arrest information long after custody or case status has changed. Verify the person’s current status with the responsible agency before relying on a reposted photograph.

Why Someone May Not Appear in a St. Louis Jail Search

The City of St. Louis specifically warns that a newly arrested person may still be in police custody, at a substation, waiting for transfer to the City Justice Center, already released, or entered under a different name spelling.

Still in police processing

A fresh arrest may not immediately produce a searchable jail record. The city directs callers who believe a person is still in police custody to SLMPD Prisoner Processing at (314) 241-8339.

Already released

A live inmate locator is not a complete historical arrest database. Release can remove the person from a current-custody result even though a court case may remain.

Wrong jurisdiction

An arrest outside the City of St. Louis may belong to St. Louis County, another Missouri county, a municipal agency or a state/federal authority.

Name mismatch

Exact-name systems can miss results when the arrest record uses a middle name, suffix, compound surname or different spelling.

Transferred

A person may have moved to another jail, state prison or another custodial authority. Search the receiving agency once a transfer is confirmed.

Case exists without current custody

Use Missouri Case.net when you need to know whether a filed criminal case exists even if the person is no longer in jail.

Arrest Record, Jail Booking, Mugshot and Court Case Are Different Records

Use the source that matches the question you are trying to answer.
Record What it can tell you Best starting point
Arrest report The arrest event, responding agency and report information, subject to Missouri public-record restrictions. Arresting police agency
Jail booking Custody intake, facility, identifiers and available booking information. City or County jail system
Mugshot A photograph associated with a booking when the image is retained and legally releasable. Custodial or arresting agency
Court case Filed charges, docket activity, hearings and available disposition information. Missouri Case.net
State offender record Missouri DOC incarceration or supervision information for people under state correctional authority. Missouri DOC Offender Search

These records can describe different stages of the same matter. Do not merge a police allegation, jail charge and final court disposition into one statement without checking each source.

Bond and Bail After a St. Louis City Arrest

Where bond is posted can change according to how long the person has been confined and what type of warrant or case is involved. The City of St. Louis publishes separate instructions for police custody, recent City Justice Center admissions and people held longer than 24 hours.

Police custody

For a person still in police custody and incarcerated less than 24 hours, the city directs users to the Bond Commissioner’s Office at the City Justice Center for eligible city ordinance or fugitive warrants.

CJC under 24 hours

The city lists Carnahan Courthouse Room 108, 114 Market Street, during weekday daytime hours, and the second floor of the City Justice Center during specified evening, weekend and court-holiday hours.

CJC over 24 hours

The city directs users to Municipal Courthouse, 1520 Market Street, Suite 1120, for the applicable bond process.

Bond rules depend on the case and can change. Confirm the amount, acceptable payment method and correct location before traveling.

Visiting Someone at the St. Louis City Justice Center

Social visits at the City Justice Center require pre-approval. The city says an inmate receives Visitor Request Forms, which are sent to prospective visitors for completion and review.

  • Visitors must be approved before the visit.
  • The inmate requests the social-visit date and time.
  • The city states that an inmate may receive one social visit per week.
  • Social visits are listed as one hour between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
  • The inmate must request the visit two days in advance.
  • Visitors are advised to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Late arrival can result in the visit being denied.

The city also publishes clothing and security restrictions. Visitors should not bring bags or other unnecessary items and should review the current rules before leaving home.

Check current City Justice Center visitation rules.

Use Missouri Case.net to Check Charges and Court Status

Missouri Case.net is the statewide public court-information system maintained through Missouri Courts. It can be searched by litigant name, case number, filing date and scheduled hearings where public access is available.

A Case.net result is more useful than a mugshot when you need to know what charge was actually filed in court, whether hearings are scheduled or how a public case later progressed.

Match records carefully. Use a case number whenever possible. If searching by name, compare the court location, filing date and other available details rather than assuming every same-name case belongs to the person in the booking record.
Search Missouri Case.net

If the Person Was Transferred to Missouri State Custody

Local jail searches focus on local custody. After a person enters the Missouri Department of Corrections system, use the state’s Offender Search rather than continuing to rely on an old city or county booking result.

The Missouri Department of Corrections states that its search covers people who are or have been under department supervision. State information can also change, so the department advises contacting the relevant institution, caseworker or probation and parole office when a specific status question requires confirmation.

How to Request a St. Louis Arrest or Booking Record

If the information you need is not displayed in an inmate search, identify which agency created or holds the record. A police arrest report, jail booking sheet and court case are normally maintained by different custodians.

Identify the arresting agency. Check police paperwork, the arrest location or the jail record.
Identify the exact record. Ask for a specific arrest report, booking sheet, booking photograph or other releasable record rather than asking for “everything.”
Provide identifiers. Include the person’s full name, approximate arrest date, location, report number, booking number or case number when known.
Use the responsible agency’s public-record process. For a City of St. Louis police record, use the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sunshine/records request procedure.
Expect lawful redactions or withholding. Juvenile information, victim information, active investigative material and other protected records may not be publicly releasable.

How to Avoid Matching the Wrong Person

Mugshot and arrest searches involve sensitive information, and a mistaken identity can seriously misrepresent another person. A name by itself is not enough when there are multiple people with similar names.

  • Compare full first, middle and last names.
  • Check suffixes such as Jr., Sr., II or III.
  • Match birth year or date of birth where publicly displayed.
  • Compare arrest and booking dates.
  • Confirm whether the jurisdiction is St. Louis City or St. Louis County.
  • Use booking, inmate or case numbers whenever possible.
  • Check the court disposition before describing an arrest as a conviction.
A current official record should take priority over an old third-party repost. If two records conflict, contact the agency responsible for the current custody or court record.

St. Louis Mugshots and Arrest Records FAQs

Where can I search St. Louis mugshots today?
Start with the official custody system for the correct jurisdiction. Use the City of St. Louis inmate locator for City Justice Center custody and St. Louis County Justice Services for county jail custody. A booking photograph may not be displayed for every inmate.
Are St. Louis City and St. Louis County jail searches the same?
No. They are separate jurisdictions with separate correctional systems. The City of St. Louis operates the City Justice Center, while St. Louis County uses the Buzz Westfall Justice Center in Clayton.
Why can’t I find someone arrested in St. Louis today?
A recent arrestee may still be in police processing, waiting for transfer, already released, listed under a different spelling or held by another jurisdiction. The City of St. Louis specifically advises contacting SLMPD Prisoner Processing when someone believed to be in police custody is not in the city locator.
Does the St. Louis inmate locator show mugshot photos?
Do not assume it does. The City of St. Louis describes its locator results as showing information such as name, year of birth, race, sex and facility. If a booking photograph is not displayed, contact the responsible agency about its records-request process.
How do I find recent St. Louis jail bookings?
Search the appropriate current inmate system using the person’s legal name. For a very recent arrest, allow for processing time and verify with the responsible police or jail agency if the person is not yet searchable.
How can I tell whether charges were dismissed?
Check the corresponding criminal case through Missouri Case.net. A jail booking or mugshot shows an arrest-stage record and does not establish the final disposition.
What is the phone number for the St. Louis City Justice Center?
The City of St. Louis lists the City Justice Center general phone number as (314) 621-5848.
What is the phone number for St. Louis County Justice Services?
The St. Louis County Department of Justice Services main public number is listed as (314) 615-5245.
What if the person was transferred to state prison?
Use the Missouri Department of Corrections Offender Search. A local jail locator may stop showing a person after transfer from county or city custody.
Does a St. Louis mugshot mean the person was convicted?
No. A mugshot or booking record documents an arrest or detention event. It does not prove guilt. Verify filed charges and the final case outcome through the appropriate court record.
