Wake County Mugshots: Arrest Photos, Jail Custody & Court Records

If you are looking for mugshots in Wake County, North Carolina, start with the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services arrest-information portal for arrest records and booking photographs. If your real question is whether someone is in jail now, use the Wake County Sheriff inmate inquiry instead.

Those systems answer different questions. An arrest-photo record can remain relevant to a past arrest even after a person leaves custody, while the inmate inquiry is designed for current detention information. North Carolina court records are the next step when you need to understand the case after booking.

Arrest does not mean conviction. A mugshot, booking entry, charge or jail record documents an arrest or custody event. It does not prove guilt and may not show a later dismissal, acquittal, expunction or other court outcome.
October 2026 access update: Wake County’s Bureau of Forensic Services says the previously announced August 17, 2026 transition of its arrest-information portal from the internet to fixed-site locations has been postponed. The Bureau says advance notice will be provided before a new implementation date. The same arrest information is also available at two public kiosks described below.

Court follow-up NC eCourts / Wake County courts
State custody NC DAC offender search
Wake County record verification path A visual path from arrest-photo search to current custody, court case verification and state custody follow-up. Arrest Photo Current Custody Court Case State Record

Use each system for the question it is designed to answer instead of treating one mugshot page as a complete criminal-history record.

Start with the official Wake County search route

Use the arrest-information portal for Wake County booking-photo and arrest-record research. Use the Sheriff inmate inquiry when you need current jail status.

Before deciding you found the correct person Compare the full name with available age, booking date, arrest date, charge or case information. Common names can produce multiple records, and an old arrest record should not be treated as proof of current custody.

The fastest route depends on what you are actually trying to confirm. Wake County arrest photos, current jail custody and court outcomes are maintained through different systems.

Wake County Arrest Records and Booking Photos

The Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services provides the official local arrest-information route. Its current disclaimer says the records on the site reflect arrests that occurred in Wake County from April 27, 2007 forward, to the extent the Bureau has been made aware of them.

That start date should not be read as a guarantee of a complete criminal history. The Bureau expressly says it cannot guarantee that every Wake County arrest for a person appears in the system.

Useful for

Arrest-event research

  • Wake County arrest records
  • Booking-photo searches
  • Arrest-date context
  • Local arrest-history research
Do not assume

It is a complete case outcome

  • A listed arrest means the person is still in jail
  • A listed charge resulted in conviction
  • The database contains every Wake County arrest
  • The arrest entry reflects every later court change
Automatic-expunction warning: the Bureau’s disclaimer says certain offenses may have been automatically expunged under North Carolina law and that the Bureau does not receive notifications from the Administrative Office of the Courts about those automatic expunctions. For that reason, do not treat an arrest-portal entry as the final word on a person’s current court record.

Use the Wake County Sheriff Police-to-Citizen inmate inquiry when your question is “Is this person currently in Wake County detention?” This is a different task from searching historical arrest photographs.

A person may have a Wake County arrest record but no longer be detained. Conversely, a very recent custody event may require rechecking the official jail system if the public record has not yet appeared where you expected it.

County jail and state prison are not the same database. NC DAC states that its offender search does not contain county-jail information. Use Wake County’s jail system for local detention and NC DAC for state prison, probation or parole information.

Wake County Arrest-Record Kiosk Access

Wake County’s current portal notice says the planned August 17, 2026 move away from internet access was postponed. It also identifies two physical kiosks where the information currently available through the arrest portal can be accessed.

Wake County arrest-information kiosk locations listed by the Bureau of Forensic Services
Location Where Access hours stated by Bureau
John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center Main lobby, 330 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; closed on Wake County-approved holidays
Wake County Detention Center Zero level near the Magistrate’s Office, 3301 Hammond Rd., Raleigh, NC Lobby listed as open 24/7, including weekends and holidays

The Bureau lists 919-255-7369 for questions about the portal-access change. Because Wake County says a new implementation date will be announced in advance, check the portal notice before making a special trip.

How to Check the Wake County Court Case After an Arrest

Once you have identified the correct arrest, use the North Carolina Judicial Branch for the case that follows. North Carolina completed statewide eCourts implementation in all 100 counties in October 2025, and Wake County uses the statewide electronic court system.

Use eCourts for public case information

The Wake County court page provides routes to court dates and online services. Searching by a correct name, citation number or case identifier can help connect a booking to its court activity.

Open North Carolina eCourts

Use the Clerk for official copies

The Judicial Branch explains that eCourts Portal provides public docket access but is not itself the official court record. Official copies should be obtained through the appropriate Clerk of Court.

Read official court-record guidance

Background-check distinction: the North Carolina Judicial Branch says the public eCourts Portal should not be treated as an official criminal background check. If you need records for a formal legal purpose, follow the Judicial Branch’s official record or background-check procedure instead.

Booking Record vs. Court Record: What Changes?

A booking record captures information around the arrest and jail-intake stage. A court record follows the legal case after charging. They can diverge as the case develops, which is why a mugshot should never be used as a substitute for checking the court outcome.

Use the record that matches the question you need answered
Question Best starting source What it does not prove
Was the person arrested in Wake County? Bureau of Forensic Services arrest portal Conviction or current custody
Is the person in county jail now? Wake Sheriff inmate inquiry Final court disposition
What is happening in the criminal case? NC eCourts / Wake County Clerk Current detention unless custody is separately confirmed
Is the person in state prison or under state supervision? NC DAC offender search Current Wake County jail custody

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction maintains a separate offender search for state prison offenders, probationers and parolees. The agency says its public database includes current and historical information dating back to 1972.

NC DAC expressly states that this database does not include county jail information. If you are searching for someone who is currently held in Wake County before a state transfer or sentence, stay with the Wake County Sheriff inmate system.

NC SAVAN: Custody Status and Notifications

North Carolina’s Statewide Automated Victim Assistance and Notification system, commonly called NC SAVAN, provides custody-status information and notifications. NC DAC says the service includes county jail inmates as well as state prisoners, probationers, parolees and registered sex offenders.

The service can send notifications by phone, email, text message or TTY. NC DAC describes SAVAN as free and confidential, making it more useful than repeatedly checking a mugshot page when your real concern is a custody-status change.

How to Avoid Matching a Wake County Record to the Wrong Person

Name-only searches can be misleading, especially with common surnames, initials, suffixes or similar ages. Treat the name as a starting point rather than final identification.

Check 1

Compare dates

Match the arrest or booking date to the event you are researching. An old Wake County arrest can belong to a different incident.

Check 2

Compare case clues

Use charge wording, case numbers or court dates when available. These details are more useful than relying on a photograph alone.

Check 3

Verify current status

Check the jail and court systems separately before describing anyone as currently incarcerated or convicted.

Do not republish an allegation as a fact about guilt. Arrest data can be incomplete, later charges can change, and some matters may be dismissed or expunged. Use neutral language and verify the current official record.

Wake County Mugshot Search Troubleshooting

No arrest result

Check spelling and date context first. Remember that Wake County’s Bureau says its portal is not guaranteed to contain every arrest for an individual.

Old mugshot, no inmate

This can simply mean the arrest is historical and the person is no longer in Wake County custody. Use the court system to research what happened afterward.

Inmate found, no old photo

Do not assume a missing photo means there was no booking. Use the current inmate inquiry for custody and verify arrest information through the Bureau or relevant law-enforcement source.

Portal record conflicts with court

Give priority to current official court information for case disposition. The Bureau itself warns that it may not receive notice of certain automatic expunctions.

Person moved to state custody

Switch to the NC DAC offender search. The county jail inquiry and state corrections database cover different custody systems.

Need official court copies

Contact the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court or follow the Judicial Branch’s court-record instructions. Portal viewing is not the same as obtaining an official record.

No. The Bureau of Forensic Services arrest portal is useful for arrest records and booking photographs. The Wake County Sheriff inmate inquiry is the better source for current county-jail custody.
How far back does the Wake County arrest portal go?
The Bureau states that its public arrest records reflect Wake County arrests from April 27, 2007 forward, to the extent the Bureau has been made aware of them. It also warns that the database may not contain every arrest for an individual.

No. A mugshot or booking record documents an arrest or intake event. It does not establish guilt or show the final court result.
Why can a mugshot record differ from the court record?
Charges and case status can change after arrest. Wake County’s Bureau also warns that it does not receive notifications from the Administrative Office of the Courts about certain automatic expunctions, so the court record should be checked separately.
