Washington State Inmate Mugshots, Recent Arrests and Jail Records
If you are searching for Washington State inmate mugshots, the most useful starting point is usually the jail that handled the booking—not a statewide mugshot gallery. Washington county and city jails maintain public jail-register information, while state prison custody is handled separately by the Washington State Department of Corrections.
Use the local jail roster when the arrest or booking happened recently.
Search people held in Washington state correctional custody by name or DOC number.
Check court filings, case numbers, hearing information and the court of record.
Use Washington State Patrol when you need an official statewide criminal-history search.
Where to Start a Washington Mugshot or Recent Arrest Search
Start with the county where the person was arrested. A recent booking normally appears first in a county or city jail system. Washington DOC is a different system and should not be treated as a statewide replacement for local jail rosters.
If the person has already been released, moved to another facility or entered state custody, the correct search route can change. Court records and WA VINE can then provide information that a jail roster may no longer show.
This distinction saves time. Someone arrested in Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Vancouver, Spokane or another Washington community may initially be held by a local jail. The fact that the person does not appear in Washington DOC search results does not establish that no arrest occurred.
How to Search Washington Recent Arrests and Inmate Records
Washington County Jail Rosters and Recent Booking Searches
Washington does not run every county jail through one public statewide roster. Counties use different jail-management systems, update schedules and public fields. Some offer a searchable roster; others provide booking or release reports.
| County | Official route | Useful information | Photo expectation |
|---|---|---|---|
| King County | Subject Lookup | Current custody, facility, booking number, booking date and arresting agency. | Booking photos are treated as confidential records and are not a general public gallery. |
| Pierce County | LINX Jail Roster | Current jail inmates, booking information, charges and related court links where available. | Pierce County states most inmate jail records, including booking photos, are exempt from public disclosure. |
| Snohomish County | Daily Jail Register | Name, booking dates, charges, offense dates, bail information and arresting agency. | Other inmate records are subject to confidentiality limits under state law. |
| Spokane County | Inmate Roster | Current Detention Services roster, booking number, custody status and bond information. | Use the roster for custody data rather than assuming a public mugshot will be available. |
| Clark County | Jail Roster | Book date, location, release date and listed charges. | The county notes that records beyond the jail roster are generally confidential. |
| Kitsap County | Corrections & Jail Lists | Current in-custody list, recent releases and people booked during the previous 72 hours. | Available fields depend on the specific jail-list view. |
| Skagit County | Roster & Booking Reports | Current jail roster, recent booking report and recent release report. | The published reports focus on booking and case information rather than a statewide mugshot gallery. |
| Whatcom County | Jail Bookings | Booking searches by date and separate current jail-roster information. | Check the official record detail instead of assuming photographs are publicly released. |
Are Washington State Booking Photos Public?
Not in the broad way many people expect when they search for mugshots. Washington’s City and County Jails Act requires a jail register to be open to the public. The register includes the name of each person confined, the time and date of confinement, the cause of confinement, and information about discharge.
The same law generally treats other records of a confined person as confidential, subject to statutory exceptions. That distinction is why an official jail roster may give you the booking date, charge or custody status without displaying a booking photograph.
King County booking photos
King County states that jail booking photos are confidential. It describes limited release routes that can include the person who was booked, the person’s attorney, law enforcement, courts, or someone who has written permission from the person photographed.
Pierce County booking photos
Pierce County states that most inmate jail records, including booking photos, are not public records. Its public jail roster instead provides fields such as name, booking date, charge, court jurisdiction, court date, bail or sentence information and release date.
If you have a legitimate reason to obtain a particular jail record, follow the records-request instructions published by the jail that created the record. The agency may require written authorization, a court order or another legal basis before confidential records can be released.
Washington DOC Incarcerated Search: When to Use It
The Washington State Department of Corrections search is designed for people in state correctional custody. The official search accepts a DOC number or a name and can return information such as the person’s name, age and current location.
Use this tool when you believe the person has entered Washington state custody. Do not make it your only search for a new county arrest. A person can be held in a county jail without appearing as a state DOC inmate.
Micro-step search process
- Open the Washington DOC Incarcerated Search.
- Use the DOC number if you have it; otherwise enter the person’s name.
- Compare the returned age and correctional location with the person you intend to find.
- If nothing appears and the arrest was recent, return to the county jail where the booking likely occurred.
- If you need the legal case rather than custody location, continue to Washington Courts.
DOC warrant search is a separate tool
Washington DOC also maintains a secretary’s warrant search. It is not a general recent-arrest database. DOC states that warrant results may include photographs when available, along with fields such as DOC number, crime category, supervision county and warrant date.
How to Check the Court Case After a Washington Arrest
Jail information answers the custody question. The court handling the case is the better source for what happened next: filed charges, hearings, case numbers, judgments and other case activity.
Washington Courts provides statewide name and case searching, but the search result is reference information rather than the official court record itself. Washington Courts directs users to the court of record when they need the complete or authoritative case file.
Practical court-record workflow
- Copy the defendant’s full name and any court or cause number shown on the jail record.
- Open the Washington Courts Name and Case Search.
- Search by the strongest identifier you have.
- Confirm the court level and county.
- For documents, certified information or an unclear disposition, contact the court of record.
Washington State Patrol WATCH Criminal-History Search
WATCH—Washington Access to Criminal History—is the Washington State Patrol’s official internet source for Washington criminal-history conviction records. It is not a mugshot gallery and it is not a live county-jail roster.
Washington State Patrol states that public criminal-history information can include conviction information, arrests less than one year old when the disposition is still pending, and information concerning registered sex or kidnapping offenders. The standard online WATCH search currently costs $11 and results are returned online.
Use WATCH when
- You need a statewide Washington criminal-history search.
- You are looking beyond one local jail.
- You need conviction-history information rather than a booking photo.
Do not use WATCH as
- A replacement for current jail custody data.
- A source of public booking photographs.
- Proof that a same-name search result belongs to the person you intended to search.
WATCH is name-based rather than a public fingerprint-to-fingerprint search. When identity is disputed, Washington State Patrol describes fingerprint procedures that can help confirm or exclude a person from an arrest or criminal-history record.
Use WA VINE for Custody and Release Notifications
If your real concern is whether a person is still in custody, has been transferred or has been released, WA VINE may be more useful than searching repeatedly for a mugshot.
Washington’s VINE program is operated by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. The program receives information from Washington city and county jails, the Department of Corrections and the Nisqually Tribal Jail. Registration for custody-status notifications is available without a user fee.
VINE notifications are not guaranteed advance warnings. Washington VINE guidance explains that notification follows the movement information entered by the jail or prison, so delays in agency data entry can affect notification timing.
How to Verify You Found the Right Person
Criminal and jail records can involve people with identical or similar names. Before sharing, saving or relying on a record, compare as many identifiers as the official source provides.
- Full first, middle and last name.
- Date of birth or age when lawfully displayed.
- Booking number, inmate number or DOC number.
- Arresting agency.
- Booking date and facility.
- Court and case number.
- Release or current-custody status.
Be especially careful with old screenshots or third-party reposts. They may remain online after release, transfer, dismissal, record correction or another change. For current information, return to the agency that owns the underlying record.
What to Do When a Washington Inmate Search Shows Nothing
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| No DOC result | The person may be in county or city custody rather than state custody. | Search the jail serving the arrest location. |
| No current jail result | The person may have been released, transferred or booked under a different spelling. | Check recent-release reports, court records and WA VINE. |
| Name produces many matches | The name is too common to identify one person safely. | Use DOB, booking number, DOC number, court number or facility. |
| Roster shows a charge but no case outcome | Jail data describes custody, not the final court disposition. | Search Washington Courts and then the court of record. |
| No mugshot appears | The photograph may be confidential even though jail-register data is public. | Read the jail’s records-release rules before submitting a request. |
| Old third-party result conflicts with official data | The copied page may be stale or incomplete. | Use the current jail, DOC or court record as the primary reference. |
Requesting Jail Records Beyond the Public Roster
A jail roster and a full inmate file are not the same thing. If the information you need is not included in the public register, first read the responsible jail’s records policy.
For example, Snohomish County publishes specified jail-register fields but states that other inmate records are confidential under RCW 70.48.100 unless an applicable release condition is met. Pierce County similarly separates its public jail roster from confidential inmate records and booking photographs.
Before filing a request
- Identify the jail that created the record.
- Write down the person’s correct booking name and booking date.
- Include the booking or inmate number when available.
- Describe the specific record you need instead of requesting an entire file without a clear purpose.
- Read the agency’s confidentiality and authorization requirements.
- Check published copy fees or deposit rules before submitting the request.
Do not assume that a general public-records request overrides a confidentiality statute. The agency can only release material that Washington law permits it to disclose.
What Washington Jail and Court Records Actually Tell You
Jail roster
Useful for current or recent custody, booking dates, listed charges, arresting agency, release information and sometimes bail or court references.
Booking photograph
A photograph created during booking. In Washington, access is legally restricted in many circumstances and it should not be treated as proof of guilt.
Court record
Useful for filings, hearing activity, judgments and the legal progress of the case. The court of record maintains the official file.
Criminal-history record
Washington State Patrol maintains statewide criminal-history information. It serves a different purpose from a local jail roster or court calendar.

Official Washington Resources Used for These Searches
Best Next Step
For a recent arrest, search the official jail serving the arrest location first. If the person is no longer there, check Washington DOC, the court system and WA VINE based on what you actually need to know. Use WATCH when your purpose is statewide criminal-history information rather than live custody.
If your search is specifically for a booking photograph, read the jail’s records-release policy before assuming the image is public. Washington’s public jail register and confidential inmate records are legally different.
This page is an independent informational resource and is not a Washington government agency, court, law-enforcement department or consumer reporting agency. Arrests, bookings, warrants and charges do not establish guilt. Verify important information with the responsible jail, court or state agency before relying on it.
