Look Up Mugshots, Recent Arrests and Jail Bookings

To look up a mugshot, start with the agency that handled the booking: usually a county sheriff, county jail or local detention center. Search the person’s name, confirm the booking number and arrest date, then use the related court system if you need to verify charges or the later outcome of the case.

An arrest photo is not proof of guilt. A booking record documents an arrest or detention event. Charges can be changed, dismissed or resolved later, and a person shown in an older record may no longer be in custody.

Choose the right search route first

There is not one federal search tool that combines every county jail booking photo in the United States. The correct route depends on which agency has or had custody.

Best information to have before searching Full legal name, approximate age or date of birth, county or city of arrest, approximate booking date and—when available—a booking, inmate or case number.
1 Identify jurisdiction
2 Search booking system
3 Confirm identifiers
4 Check court record

How to Find Today’s Mugshots and Recent Bookings

If you are looking for an arrest from today, use a booking-date or “last 24 hours” filter when the official system provides one. Newly arrested people may not appear immediately because intake, identification and data-entry work must be completed before a public record is posted.

Arrest happened today

Check the county jail or sheriff arrest search first. If there is no result, try again later rather than assuming the person was released or never booked.

Booked yesterday

Use the booking-date range if available. Search the full legal name and compare the arrest date with the booking date because the two can differ.

Older arrest

The current-inmate roster may no longer contain the record. Look for an archive, records-request page or the corresponding criminal court case.

Transferred or sentenced

Move from the county system to the state Department of Corrections or federal BOP locator when custody has changed.

What a Mugshot or Jail Booking Record May Show

A booking page can contain several identifiers that are more useful than the photograph itself. Record the identifiers before leaving the page, especially if you expect to check the court docket or call the facility.

Common booking-record fields and how to use them
Record field What it tells you How to use it
Booking photo Image taken or used during the booking process when the agency publishes one. Treat it only as one part of identity verification; never assume guilt from the image.
Booking number Identifier for a particular jail booking. Useful when contacting the detention facility or distinguishing multiple arrests.
Inmate or person ID Agency identifier associated with the person. Can separate people with similar names and may remain useful across bookings.
Booking date When jail intake was recorded. Use it to distinguish a current event from an older arrest.
Charges Allegations or holds listed at the booking stage. Verify later changes through the appropriate court record.
Bond Bond information recorded by the detention system at that time. Confirm current terms with the jail or court because status can change.
Case number Link between the jail event and a court case when provided. Use it in the clerk or court search for later filings and disposition.
Custody status Whether the person appears to be held, released or transferred. Check the timestamp and facility because jail data changes quickly.

Why You May Not Find a Mugshot

A missing result does not necessarily mean the arrest did not happen. The most common explanation is that you are searching the wrong jurisdiction, the record has not yet been posted, the person moved to another custody system, or the agency does not publish booking photos online.

Wrong county or facility

An arresting police department and the jail that performs booking may be different agencies. Search the detention authority serving the arrest location.

Name mismatch

Try the legal surname, alternate spelling, hyphenated name or middle name. Avoid adding too many filters at once.

Record is still processing

A very recent arrest can take time to appear. Search again later if the agency confirms that its public roster is updated periodically.

Person was released

Some systems emphasize current inmates and stop showing a person after release. Look for a booking archive or court case instead.

Photo is restricted or unavailable

The agency may publish booking data without publishing the image, or state/local law and agency policy may limit access.

Custody changed

A transfer to state prison, federal custody or another county can move the person out of the original jail search.

Do not use a failed name search as proof that someone has no arrest record. Public search tools differ in coverage, retention and update frequency.

Use Court Records to Check What Happened After the Arrest

A jail booking page describes the detention event; it is not the complete court history. If you need to know whether charges were filed, amended, dismissed or resolved, search the court connected to the case number.

State or county criminal case

Use the official state judiciary, county clerk or local court case-search system. Search by the case number from the booking record when possible because it is more precise than a broad name search.

Federal criminal case

PACER provides public electronic access to federal court records. Registered users can search the court where a case was filed or use the nationwide federal case index.

PACER is a federal court-record service, not a state or county mugshot database. Do not use it as the first search route for an ordinary county jail booking.

How to Make Sure You Found the Right Person

Name-only matching creates a real risk of confusing two people. Before treating a booking page as belonging to a particular person, compare several identifiers that independently point to the same individual.

  • Full first, middle and last name
  • Age or date-of-birth information when publicly displayed
  • Booking date and arrest location
  • Booking or inmate identification number
  • Arresting agency
  • Facility where the person is held
  • Court case number
A mugshot should never be the only identity check. Similar appearance, common names, old photos and incomplete third-party records can all lead to a wrong-person match.

What an Official Arrest Search Can Look Like

The Broward Sheriff’s Office in Florida, for example, operates an Arrest Search that lets users search people in its detention system and open an arrest number for a booking photograph and more detailed information. Its own notice also warns that inmate information can change and that an arrest does not mean the person has been convicted.

Other counties use different software and terminology. Putnam County, Florida, for example, operates a “JAIL View” interface with search fields for names, booking dates and release dates. These examples show why searching for the responsible local agency is more useful than expecting every county to use one national layout.

Use Arrest and Mugshot Information Carefully

Booking information can be incomplete, time-sensitive and easily misunderstood outside its original context. If accuracy matters, preserve the booking number and then check the court record or contact the responsible agency for current information.

Do not treat an arrest, booking photo or unresolved charge as proof of criminal guilt. Do not use this website as a substitute for legal advice or as a consumer report for employment, housing, credit, insurance or another decision governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Frequently Asked Questions About Looking Up Mugshots

How can I look up mugshots online?
Start with the official sheriff, county jail or detention-center website for the location where the arrest occurred. Look for an inmate search, arrest search, booking log or jail roster and search the person’s legal name.
Where can I find today’s mugshots?
Use the responsible jail’s recent-booking or booking-date search when available. A same-day arrest may not appear immediately while intake and record processing are still underway.
Is there one national mugshot database?
There is no single federal service that combines all county and state booking photographs. County jails, sheriffs, state corrections departments and federal agencies maintain separate custody systems.
Why does an inmate search show a record but no mugshot?
The agency may not publish booking photographs online, the image may be restricted, or the public system may provide only custody and booking information. Availability varies by jurisdiction and agency policy.
Can I search mugshots by name?
Yes, many official jail systems support name searches. Confirm the match with booking date, age, booking number, arresting agency or case number because multiple people can share the same name.
Does a mugshot mean someone was convicted?
No. A booking photograph is associated with an arrest or detention process. It does not establish guilt, and charges may later be changed, dismissed or resolved by a court.
How do I find an old mugshot after someone was released?
A current-inmate roster may no longer display the person. Check for an official historical booking search, contact the responsible records unit, or locate the related criminal court case using the case number.
How do I look up a federal inmate?
Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator for federal BOP custody. It supports searches by name and several identifying-number types and covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present.
Can PACER show county arrest mugshots?
PACER is the federal judiciary’s electronic court-record system. It is useful for federal case information, but it is not a county jail mugshot or local arrest-photo database.
What should I do if I find the wrong person with the same name?
Do not rely on the name or photograph alone. Compare booking number, age or birth information, arrest date, facility, arresting agency and court case number before associating a record with a person.
