Johnston County Arrest Mugshots, Today’s Bookings & Jail Records
For current Johnston County jail custody, start with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office inmate inquiry. For a recent arrest that may no longer appear in the active jail roster, use the Sheriff’s separate recent-arrest search, which covers the last 15 calendar days.
The two searches answer different questions. The inmate inquiry tells you who is currently housed in the Johnston County Jail, while the recent-arrest database helps locate recent Johnston County Sheriff’s Office arrest records by name or date range.
Choose the search that matches what you need
If you are trying to confirm custody now, use the live inmate inquiry first. If you are looking for someone arrested recently but not necessarily still jailed, use the recent-arrest search.
A mugshot or booking entry is the beginning of the record trail, not the final court result.
How to Search the Johnston County Jail Inmate Roster
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office provides an official inmate inquiry for people currently housed in the county jail. The live list commonly shows a person’s name, primary charge and arrest date; opening an individual entry can provide additional booking information and, when available in that record, an inmate photograph.
Today’s Johnston County Arrests and Recent Bookings
The Sheriff’s recent-arrest tool is the better route when your question is “Was this person arrested recently?” rather than “Is this person in jail right now?” JCSO states that this public search contains arrests from the last 15 calendar days.
You can search by last name, with first name as an additional identifier, or enter a beginning and ending date. For date searches, the dates must fall within the 15-day window and are entered in month/day/year format.
Search by name
Best when you know the person’s legal last name. Adding the first name can narrow the result.
Search by date range
Best for reviewing arrests on a specific day or within a short known period inside the available 15-day window.
Where Johnston County Mugshots and Booking Photos Appear
Johnston County’s official inmate inquiry can display an inmate photo on an individual inmate record. This makes the Sheriff’s own system the preferred starting point when you are trying to connect a booking photograph with a current jail record.
Do not assume that every arrest will have a publicly displayed photo, or that the absence of a photo means the person was not arrested. The search systems and the information displayed can change, and recent-arrest data and current-inmate data serve different purposes.
Match the person before relying on the photo
- Compare the complete name, including middle name or suffix when shown.
- Check the arrest or booking date.
- Compare age when the official record provides it.
- Review the charge and case context rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Use court records for the later case outcome.
What a Johnston County Booking Record Can — and Cannot — Tell You
| Record field | What it usually tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Name | The identity entered in the jail or arrest record. | That two people with similar names are the same person. |
| Arrest / booking date | When the recorded arrest or booking occurred. | The date of a later court decision. |
| Charge | The allegation or legal charge recorded at that stage. | Conviction or final disposition. |
| Inmate photo | A photograph associated with the jail record when displayed. | Guilt or the later outcome of the case. |
| Current roster presence | The person is listed as currently housed when the roster was updated. | Future custody status or a final release time. |
The Sheriff’s active inmate list changes as people are booked, released, transferred or otherwise leave county custody. If timing matters, confirm the information again rather than relying on a screenshot or an older third-party copy.
How to Check Bond, Charges and Release Requirements
For current charge or bond information, Johnston County’s jail FAQ directs callers to the jail at 919-989-5040 or the Johnston County Clerk’s Office at 919-209-5400. Have the inmate’s full name ready.
For the requirements to have an inmate released, the Sheriff’s Office directs the public to the Magistrate’s Office at 919-209-5463 or to a bondsman. Release conditions depend on the actual case, so do not infer the required amount or process from another person’s booking.
Call Johnston County Jail at 919-989-5040 or the Clerk of Superior Court at 919-209-5400.
Contact the Magistrate’s Office at 919-209-5463 for current release requirements.
Use the North Carolina Judicial Branch Portal or the Johnston County Clerk’s Office to check the court side of the case.
Check Johnston County Criminal Court Records After an Arrest
A jail booking and a court case are related but separate records. North Carolina’s Judicial Branch provides Portal access for case information, and Johnston County court matters are handled through the Johnston County Courthouse in Smithfield.
Online case information
Use the North Carolina Judicial Branch Portal to look for available case information and court dates.
Need a criminal background search?
That is a different task from viewing a mugshot or current booking. The North Carolina Judicial Branch says a certified single-county criminal record search can be requested through the Clerk of Superior Court using Form AOC-CR-314 and currently carries a $25 fee. Public courthouse terminals can also be used for non-certified searches.
Johnston County Jail Phone Numbers and Address
The Sheriff’s jail FAQ lists the jail’s physical location as 127 S. Second Street, Smithfield, NC 27577. The inmate mailing address is different, so use the dedicated mail address when sending permitted correspondence.
Johnston County Jail Visitation
JCSO states that visitation is held on weekends by appointment. Appointments are scheduled by calling 919-989-5045 on Tuesday or Wednesday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Appointment limits
- One 15-minute appointment per inmate per week.
- Up to four people may visit during an appointment.
- Provide the names of everyone who will visit when scheduling.
ID and location
JCSO says visitors registering at age 16 or older must have a valid ID or DMV-issued driver’s license, with the age-related accompaniment requirements stated in the jail’s current visitation rules.
Published visitation location: 127 S. Second Street, Smithfield, in the Magistrate’s lobby.
Because jail schedules can change for security, staffing or operational reasons, call before traveling if the visit is important or you are coming from outside Johnston County.
Money, Commissary, Phone Calls and Inmate Mail
Depositing money
The current jail FAQ lists three deposit routes: a kiosk in the criminal magistrate lobby, mailed money orders or certified checks made payable in the inmate’s full name, and online deposits through JailATM. JCSO says the kiosk is available 24 hours a day and that online JailATM transactions carry service fees shown by the provider.
Located in the criminal magistrate lobby outside the jail and listed by JCSO as available 24 hours a day.
Use a money order or certified check payable in the inmate’s full name and follow the jail’s current mailing instructions.
JCSO identifies JailATM as the online commissary/deposit provider. Provider fees can apply.
Inmate phone service
Johnston County identifies Securus Technologies as its inmate phone-service provider. The jail FAQ says inmates may place collect calls or use calling options available through the jail system.
Mailing an inmate
JCSO publishes the following inmate-mail format:
P.O. Box 1496
Smithfield, NC 27577
Include a return address and verify current content restrictions before mailing books, photographs, publications or other items.
The jail has specific restrictions on photographs, books, publications, medication and other property. Check the current Johnston County Jail FAQ before sending anything beyond ordinary correspondence.
How to Find an Older Johnston County Arrest Record
The public recent-arrest search is limited to the last 15 calendar days. When the arrest is older, switch from the short-window search to the record source that matches what you actually need.
Search North Carolina court information or contact the Johnston County Clerk of Superior Court.
The JCSO phone directory lists 919-989-5010 for incidents and arrest reports.
Use the active inmate inquiry even if the arrest itself occurred more than 15 days ago.
Use the Clerk of Superior Court process when you need a certified single-county criminal record search rather than a mugshot lookup.
Do not assume that a missing result means no arrest occurred. A person may fall outside the recent-arrest window, may no longer be in county custody, or the information you entered may not match the official record.
NC SAVAN / VINELink Custody Notifications
If you need notification when an offender’s custody status changes, North Carolina operates NC SAVAN, also known through VINELink. The state describes it as a free and anonymous victim-notification service that can provide custody information and alerts.
Johnston County Mugshot and Inmate Search Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No result in the active inmate list | The person may have been released, transferred, or may not be in Johnston County custody. | Try the recent-arrest search and verify through the jail if current custody matters. |
| No result in recent arrests | The arrest may be older than the 15-day public search window. | Check court records or contact JCSO regarding arrest/incident reports. |
| Several people have the same name | Name-only searching can produce ambiguous matches. | Compare age, arrest date, charge and other identifiers before associating the record with someone. |
| Mugshot is missing | A photo may not be publicly displayed for that record or in that search view. | Use the official inmate detail record when available; do not treat a missing image as proof that no booking occurred. |
| Charge shown online looks outdated | The jail entry reflects a stage of the case and may not show later court action. | Check NC court information and the Johnston County Clerk’s Office. |
| Need the exact release requirement | Release conditions depend on the current case and judicial order. | Contact the Magistrate’s Office at 919-209-5463. |
