Austin Mugshots, Booking Photos, Charges and Jail Records
The fastest official route for Austin mugshots is usually the Austin Police Department Booking Photo Database. For current jail custody, booking identifiers and inmate status, use the Travis County Sheriff’s Office inmate search. Court records should then be checked separately because a booking entry or arrest charge does not show the final result of a criminal case.
Treat the booking photo as the starting point. Current custody and the court case may live in different official systems.
Where to Search Austin Mugshots Online
The City of Austin provides an official Austin Police Department Booking Photo Database. It can be searched using several identifiers, including first or last name, date of birth, booking number, booking date and charge information.
APD states that eligible booking photographs are posted 13 days after the arrest date. That means a person arrested today may have a valid booking record or current jail entry even though a photograph has not yet appeared in the public APD photo database.
What the APD database can help you find
- Adult booking photographs that qualify for public posting
- Results matched by name or date of birth
- Records searched by booking number or booking date
- Searches using charge information
Why a photo may not appear
- The arrest occurred less than 13 days ago.
- The arrested person is a juvenile.
- Release of the image could interfere with law-enforcement interests.
- The spelling, date of birth or booking details used in the search are incorrect.
Check Current Travis County Jail Custody
If the immediate question is whether someone is still being held, start with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office inmate information system rather than the booking-photo archive. Travis County’s criminal courts direct users to TCSO’s inmate page for people currently in custody.
The jail search is particularly useful when the APD photograph has not yet been posted. Booking identifiers found in the custody record can also make later searches for court information, bond details or public records more accurate.
How to Search Austin Mugshots and Booking Information
How to Verify Charges and Court Case Information
A jail booking charge describes the basis for the booking at that point in time. Prosecutors and courts may later file different charges, amend allegations, decline a case or resolve it in another way. For that reason, court records are the better source for understanding what happened after the arrest.
Use the Travis County Criminal Docket Search. It supports searches by the arrested person’s name, attorney, judge or court number, and case number. Open Criminal Docket Search.
Travis County District Clerk maintains district-court criminal records. The county’s online records information states that public criminal records in its digital search generally cover 2008 to the present. See District Clerk case records.
County Courts at Law misdemeanor records are handled through the Travis County Clerk. Open Travis County Clerk court data.
The Travis County Criminal Courts page links the current inmate search, docket search, felony records and misdemeanor records from one official starting point. Open Criminal Courts.
How to Request a Booking Photo That Is Not Online
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office says non-media members of the public seeking a TCSO booking photo should use an Open Records Request. If TCSO was not the arresting agency, another agency may control release of the image.
A written TCSO public-information request should identify the requester and describe the records being requested in enough detail for staff to locate them. TCSO accepts requests through its published public-information channels and lists its records office at 5555 Airport Blvd., Austin, Texas 78751.
Include useful identifiers
- Full legal name
- Date of birth, when known
- Booking number or jail ID
- Approximate arrest or booking date
- Specific description such as “booking photograph”
Know which agency you need
For a recent Austin Police arrest, check the APD booking-photo database first. For a TCSO booking photo that is not available through the public search, use the Sheriff’s Office open-records process.
Bond Information After an Austin Booking
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office publishes bond information separately from the inmate search. A listing that says “cash or surety” means the defendant may use a cash or surety bond rather than a personal bond. “No bond information available” means a bond has not yet been set for that charge and may be set later.
For cash bonds, TCSO directs people to the facility where the defendant is housed and advises callers to confirm the correct location first. The Sheriff’s Office states that cash bonds may be posted using the exact cash amount, a cashier’s check or a money order under its published rules.
Austin and Travis County Jail Facilities
Travis County Sheriff’s Office operates the downtown Travis County Jail/Central Booking Facility and the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle. A person may be booked downtown and later housed at the correctional complex, so confirm the current housing location before mailing correspondence, visiting or handling property matters.
| Facility | Address | Typical relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Travis County Jail / Central Booking Facility | 500 W. 10th St., Austin, TX 78701 | Central booking and downtown jail functions |
| Travis County Correctional Complex | 3614 Bill Price Rd., Del Valle, TX 78617 | Primary inmate housing complex and visitation location |
Visiting Someone Held in Travis County
TCSO’s published visitation information lists face-to-face and onsite video visitation Wednesday through Sunday, excluding county holidays, generally between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Face-to-face family and friend visits are non-contact and must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
Visitors age 17 and older need government-issued photo identification. Minors under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. TCSO also warns that arriving late can cause a scheduled visit to be cancelled.
Custody and Release Notifications for Victims
People who need continuing notification should not rely on repeatedly checking a mugshot page. Texas Department of Criminal Justice Victim Services operates the Integrated Victim Services System for post-conviction offender-status information and notifications.
Registered users can receive qualifying notifications by text message, email or letter. The system covers changes such as release to supervision, discharge and other post-conviction status events involving people in TDCJ custody or supervision.
Why You May Not Find the Austin Mugshot or Booking Record
Possible explanation: APD does not post eligible booking photos immediately. What to do: check TCSO current custody first and return to the APD database after the published posting interval.
Possible explanation: spelling, hyphenation, aliases or multiple surnames can affect a search. What to do: verify date of birth and use a booking number when available.
Possible explanation: juvenile records are not posted, a law-enforcement exception may apply, or the image has not yet reached the posting date. What to do: use the responsible agency’s public-record process when appropriate.
Possible explanation: the current-custody search changes after release or transfer. What to do: use the booking-photo database and court records for historical arrest and case information.
Possible explanation: booking charges and filed court charges can differ. What to do: rely on the current court case for the prosecution status and disposition.
Possible explanation: more than one person may share a name. What to do: compare date of birth, booking number, case number and other official identifiers before drawing any conclusion.
What an Austin Booking Record Does—and Does Not—Tell You
Booking photo
A photograph associated with intake into a booking system. Its existence does not prove the allegation was true or that a prosecution resulted in conviction.
Booking charge
The offense information attached to the booking at that stage. Prosecutors may later file, change or decline charges.
Court disposition
The later court record may show dismissal, plea, trial result or another resolution. This is the record to check when the outcome matters.
