Find Johnston County Mugshots, Recent Arrests and Current Jail Records
If you are looking for Johnston County NC mugshots or a recent booking, start with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office provides separate official tools for recent arrest records and people who are currently in the county jail. Those two searches answer different questions, so using the correct one can save time.
The official recent-arrest search covers the most recent 15 calendar days and can be searched by name or by a date range within that period. The Sheriff’s current-inmate search is a live custody lookup. If you need a court date, case status, disposition, or an older criminal case, use the North Carolina Judicial Branch rather than relying only on a booking record.
Choose the search that matches what you need
Fastest route: use Arrest Search for a recent booking, Inmate Search to confirm current custody, and the North Carolina eCourts Portal or Johnston County Clerk of Superior Court for the court case.
How to Search Recent Johnston County Arrests
The official Johnston County arrest search is the most direct starting point for a person booked recently. Johnston County states that the public search includes arrest records from the last 15 calendar days. The Sheriff’s Office also describes its arrest search as a daily-updated source for recent arrests.
Recent Arrest Search vs. Current Johnston County Inmate Search
These official tools are related, but they are not interchangeable. A recent-arrest record tells you that an arrest was recorded during the available search period. The inmate inquiry tells you who is currently housed in the Johnston County Jail.
| What you want to know | Best official source | What it tells you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Was someone arrested recently? | JCSO Arrest Search | Recent arrest entries and available booking information | Search window is limited to the latest 15 calendar days |
| Is the person in jail now? | JCSO Inmate Search | Current Johnston County jail custody | It is not a historical arrest archive |
| What happened with the criminal case? | NC eCourts Portal | Public case information and court events | Portal is not the official certified court record |
| Do I need an official or certified record? | Johnston County Clerk of Superior Court | Official court-file access and certified record services | Fees may apply depending on the request |
| Was the person later sent to state prison? | NC DAC Offender Search | State prisoners, probationers and parolees | Does not contain Johnston County jail records |
This distinction matters when a recent arrest no longer appears in the live jail list. The person may have bonded out, been released, transferred, or had another custody change. A missing current-inmate result does not erase the original arrest record.
What You Can Learn From a Johnston County Booking Record
The exact fields available can vary by record and system. A jail or arrest entry may provide enough information to identify the booking and begin a court search, but it should not be treated as a complete criminal history.
Identity information
Look for the person’s displayed full name and other identifying information available in the record. Common names require extra care before assuming a match.
Arrest information
The record may show an arrest or booking date and a charge description. Charge wording reflects the booking or case stage available at that time.
Booking photo
If an official booking image is made available with the record, use it only as an identification aid. Photo availability can vary and does not indicate the final court outcome.
Custody status
Use the live inmate inquiry to determine whether the person is presently housed in the county jail. Historical arrest information and current custody are separate questions.
Charge and bond
For current charge or bond questions, the Johnston County Detention Center directs users to the Clerk’s Office or jail rather than relying only on an online listing.
Court follow-up
Case numbers, court dates, dispositions and later filings belong to the court record. Follow the booking with an eCourts or Clerk of Superior Court search when those details matter.
Why a Johnston County Mugshot or Arrest May Not Appear
A zero-result search does not always mean that no arrest occurred. The first thing to check is whether you are using the correct official tool for the question you are asking.
The recent-arrest search is intentionally limited to the latest 15 calendar days. For an older matter, move to court records or contact the appropriate records custodian.
The live inmate search shows current custody. Someone who was recently arrested may have posted bond, been released, transferred, or otherwise left county custody.
Hyphenated surnames, multiple surnames, spelling differences, suffixes, and similar names can affect a search. Compare other identifiers before deciding that two records belong to the same person.
A jail booking, court case, state-prison record, probation record, and police report are maintained for different purposes. One database should not be expected to contain every record.
How to Check the Court Case After Finding an Arrest
A mugshot or jail entry shows only one stage of a criminal matter. If you need to know whether charges are still pending, what the next hearing is, or how the case was resolved, continue with the North Carolina Judicial Branch.
Search online through North Carolina eCourts Portal
North Carolina now uses the Enterprise Justice electronic case-management system statewide. The public eCourts Portal allows searches for public case information and court events. Johnston County has used eCourts since the earlier phases of the statewide rollout.

Certified single-county criminal record search
For a certified Johnston County criminal record search, the North Carolina Judicial Branch says an individual can submit Form AOC-CR-314 to the Clerk of Superior Court. The published fee is $25 for the single-county certified search. In-person and mail payment options differ, so confirm the current instructions before submitting the request.

How to Check Charges, Bond and Release Information
Online arrest information may not answer every bond question. The Johnston County Detention Center directs people seeking current charges or bond amounts to the Johnston County Clerk’s Office at 919-209-5400 or the jail at 919-989-5040. Have the incarcerated person’s full name ready.
Charge or bond amount
Call the Clerk of Superior Court or jail. This is the better route when the online arrest page is incomplete or the bond information may have changed.
Release requirements
The Sheriff’s detention FAQ directs people to the Magistrate’s Office at 919-209-5463 to determine release requirements. A bonding agent may also be used when appropriate.
Bond status can change after a first appearance or another judicial action. For that reason, do not rely on an old screenshot, cached mugshot page, or third-party listing when making a payment or arranging release.
Johnston County Detention Center: Contact, Visits, Money and Mail
If your search confirms that a person is currently in custody, the next question is often how to contact, visit, or send funds to the inmate. Johnston County’s current detention guidance provides the following routes.
Johnston County Detention Center
Physical address: 2879 US-70 BUS E, Smithfield, NC 27577
Main / general information: 919-989-5040
Medical: 919-989-5035
Commissary / mail / visitation: 919-989-5099 or 919-989-5034
Video visitation
Johnston County states that inmate visitation is conducted by video, either on-site or remotely. Visitors must first create an approved PayTel Communications account. A valid state or federal photo ID is required when setting up the account, and the visit request must be made at least 72 hours before the requested visit time.
The published jail rules allow each inmate up to three 15-minute visits per week and no more than one visit per day. Adults visiting on-site must present valid photographic identification, and children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, custodian, or caretaker.
Check the current JCSO Detention Center instructions before scheduling
Inmate money and commissary
The Sheriff’s Office lists three ways to place money on an inmate’s account: use the lobby kiosk at the jail, deposit online through JailATM, or mail a money order addressed to the inmate. Cash and checks are not accepted by mail.
The jail currently states that commissary and hygiene orders are limited to $140 per week. Because vendor fees and jail rules can change, confirm the current amount before sending money.
Inmate mail should be addressed to the inmate at:
Inmate’s Name
P.O. Box 1496
Smithfield, NC 27577
Include a return address. Books generally must come directly from a publisher or bookstore and must meet facility restrictions. The jail also limits photographs and inspects incoming items.
If the Person Was Transferred to a North Carolina State Prison
The Johnston County inmate search is for county-jail custody. If a person has been convicted and moved into the North Carolina state correctional system, switch to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction’s Offender Public Information Search.
The state database can be searched by name or offender ID and covers North Carolina state prisoners, probationers, and parolees. NCDAC specifically states that its offender database does not contain county-jail information, so it should not replace the Johnston County Sheriff’s search for a new local booking.
Custody notifications for victims and families
North Carolina SAVAN provides free, confidential custody-status notifications. The Department of Adult Correction says the service includes county jail inmates, state prisoners, probationers, parolees, and registered sex offenders. Notifications can be delivered by phone, email, text message, or TTY.
Verify the Person Before Relying on a Mugshot or Arrest Record
Arrest databases involve real people and can easily be misunderstood when names are similar. Before sharing a record or using it to make a decision, confirm that the information actually belongs to the person you intended to search.
- Compare the full name rather than relying on a surname alone.
- Check the arrest or booking date against what you already know.
- Use available identifying information to separate people with similar names.
- Confirm whether the person is still in custody using the live inmate search.
- Use the court record to check later hearings and case disposition.
- Do not describe an arrest charge as a conviction unless the court record supports that statement.

Use the Arrest Record as a Starting Point, Not the Final Answer
For a recent Johnston County arrest, begin with the Sheriff’s official Arrest Search. Use the current-inmate inquiry if you need to know whether the person remains in custody. Then move to the North Carolina court system when you need a hearing date, case history, disposition, or an official court record.
This sequence gives you a more accurate picture than relying on a mugshot alone: arrest record → current custody → court case → final disposition or later correctional status. When information conflicts, verify it with the agency responsible for that specific record.
